CHAPTER FOUR

A vibration coming from Sherry's pocket caused her to jump from her place. She sighed in relief after realizing she had set her phone on vibrate. She walked a few metres away from the door, and reached into her left trouser pocket and grabbed her cell out. The caller had identified as XXXXCLIENTXXXX at the top of the small rectangular screen. She hit the answer button and spoke into the receiver. "The targets are inside the dining room now. I've secured the front entrance connecting to the lobby." She disclosed. "Alright. I'll have the boys go back to the kitchen exit. They have nowhere to escape to now. Those rich bastards." The caller on the other end spat into the receiver, and hung up. Sherry grinned a cruel sneer at the events that were about to take place. "Those motherfuckers would never know what hit them." she proceeded back to her post. This had been too easy, Sherry thought back to how she had managed to fool the infamous James Lewiston. Eight months ago Sherry had been hired as the personal assistant to James after a series of interviews and background checks. She had anticipated that the post of personal assistant to a public figure would not be an easy job to get so she proceeded to forge her identity. Impersonating a scholar with an incredible academic background and a strong portfolio in business management, she placed herself among the top list of successful applicants to be interviewed. She began to see a ray of hope for once since her brother's funeral—who had been killed by some gangsters hired by Lewiston 's Corp which was headed by none other than James Lewiston . She had sought to avenge her brother ever since she found out about his killer, but didn't know how to get her revenge. Going to court was out of the picture as the law protected people like James from any prosecution. And besides she had no tangible evidence to prove him guilty. She had thought of tracking down the gangsters and using them to testify against James, but she knew by common sense that they would have been paid an extra amount to keep quiet about the murder. What was she to do? She had no way of bringing her enemy down, she had not a recognizable social status to even start with. She was powerless. She had to start somewhere at least, so she started working at the front desk of Lewiston's Corp. She knew she was a step closer to achieving her goal. All she had to do was have a little patience. Then out of nowhere eight months ago, the personal assistant to James Lewiston retired due to reasons unknown to her; she didn't care to find out because she was too absorbed in her anger. This was an opportunity for her to get even closer to James. However before she applied for the office, she immediately quit her position at the front desk and readied copies of forged documents. For one she knew she would not qualify for the position at her level and also she didn't want her real identity to be revealed to James as he might dig into her background and find out that the man he had hired some members of a street gang to kill had a sister who wanted to work under him. That would be a bad move. It would completely jeopardize her plans. After qualifying for the interview, she knew all she had to do was ace that and she would progress to the next stage of her plan. On the day of the interview, Sherry had impersonated the character of a business development manager with experience as an administrative assistant. She was impressed with the way she fooled the entire company and the panel of interviewers. And as expected, she got the post. "Too easy." Sherry grinned again. James had run out of words to say to Shannon after he was done with his meal. He sat in silence momentarily glancing at Shannon's enticing figure. He didn't know what to talk about with someone who would rather be somewhere else than be there with him. Shannon gazed at the painting at the far side of the room, her features illuminating under the recessed lighting. "It's beautiful." She said, breaking the awkward silence between them. James turned his head in the direction of the canvas hanging on the veneered wall. It was a piece by William Langley; a picture of the sun setting while a flock of sheep grazed on a grassy landscape. A vintage painting. "It looks so peaceful," Shannon added. She had been drawn into the painting and she had forgotten who she was sitting with. James, on the opposite side, didn't know what he was looking at exactly. He was not very bright when it came to paintings on canvas. They both stared at the painting, one in admiration, and the other in examination. Meanwhile, on the other side of the room, Sherry received another call from the same person who had phoned her earlier, but this time it was a signal for her to commence their operation. The moment for which she would exact her revenge had finally come. She almost felt sorry for him. She glanced at her watch, and confirmed the time. It was exactly 8 o'clock. She moved swiftly to the door, and took a quick breath before turning the handle. Shannon and James' gaze shot up at the sudden interruption. Although she had wished for a miracle to happen for her to dump her date, Shannon had not expected the miracle to be James' PA pointing a pistol at them. "What is the meaning of this, Sherry?" James questioned, bolting up from his seat. Sherry had pulled out a Maxim 9 and aimed at James as soon as she walked into the room. "I'd shut up if I were you," Sherry barked, pulling out her cell to signal her other colleagues that the mission had commenced, and she was already in position for their next plan. Quickly thinking up a solution for her situation after noticing that she was a bystander, Shannon whipped her head to the direction the waiter who had brought their food had emerged from, and made a move for the door while Sherry was distracted with James. Without further thinking, Sherry trailed the pistol at Shannon, and shot her on the leg causing her to drop on the floor. Shannon let out a high pitched cry while holding her shot leg. What was once a monotonous gathering had taken a hostile turn.
