CHAPTER FIVE — THE 18TH MOON

956 Words
The dawn of Aderin’s eighteenth birthday arrived with an uneasy calm. The morning sun bled gold across the forest, brushing the rooftops of Bloodmoon territory in quiet light. Birds sang above, yet even their songs sounded far away to her. Silence — her oldest companion — cradled her still. She woke to the soft touch of Mama Ireti’s hand on her cheek. “Eighteen,” the old woman whispered, smiling with eyes full of pride and sorrow. “My moon child is now a woman.” Aderin smiled faintly. She could read her grandmother’s lips, though the soundless world around her remained unchanged. She mouthed, Thank you, Mama. Mama Ireti brushed her hair back. “The Goddess will watch over you. Just remember—your silence is not a curse.” Aderin nodded, though a flicker of doubt burned inside her. Sometimes, silence felt heavier than stone. --- That evening, the Bloodmoon Festival began again — a continuation of the grand ceremony from days before, marking the passing of moons and the blessing of new adults. The entire pack gathered in the clearing, torches flickering like tiny suns against the night. Drums thundered. Dancers swirled. The air smelled of fire, roasted meat, and destiny. Kael stood on the high platform with his Beta, his jaw hard as stone. He should have been enjoying the celebration, but his chest ached. Zion, his wolf, had been restless all day. > “She’s eighteen tonight,” Zion whispered. “We will not escape it this time.” Kael’s grip tightened around his wine cup. “Enough,” he hissed under his breath. “I will not claim her.” > “You cannot reject what is written in the stars.” “Watch me.” Selena appeared beside him, glittering in a crimson gown that matched the torches’ glow. She slipped her arm around his waist, eyes shining with possession. “Smile, my Alpha. The pack is watching.” Kael forced one, though it felt hollow. --- Down below, Aderin stood near the edge of the crowd, her simple white dress glowing faintly in the moonlight. Mama Ireti had braided her hair with silver beads — the mark of adulthood. She watched the dancers, their laughter lost to her ears, but she could feel the rhythm through the ground. Every vibration pulsed up her legs like a heartbeat. She smiled, swaying gently. For a moment, she forgot everything — her pain, her difference, her fear. Then… the air shifted. It was subtle at first, like a change in the wind’s breath. Then stronger — the sharp snap of a bond awakening. Her chest tightened. Her pulse roared. Somewhere across the clearing, Kael stiffened. Their eyes met. And the world went still. The drums stopped. The laughter faded. Every sound vanished into a void of trembling silence — not just for her, but for everyone. The Moon’s light burned white-hot, wrapping around them like a living flame. Aderin gasped. Her wolf, Seya, howled within her mind for the first time. > “Mate.” She stumbled, clutching her chest as the bond surged through her veins like lightning. Every nerve screamed with recognition — pain and ecstasy colliding as one. Kael’s breath hitched. Zion roared inside him, desperate and wild. > “Go to her! Claim her!” But Kael couldn’t move. Selena followed his gaze, confusion twisting into fury when she saw Aderin. “That girl?” she hissed. “You’re looking at that mute?” Kael’s eyes flashed gold, torn between duty and desire. His heart thundered painfully, his soul recognizing what his pride refused to. > “Kael, please,” Zion growled. “Don’t do this.” But Kael stepped forward, his expression turning cold as stone. --- The entire pack watched in stunned silence as their Alpha descended from the platform. The air crackled with the weight of prophecy. Aderin trembled as he approached, unsure if she should bow or run. He stopped in front of her. His scent — cedar and smoke — filled her lungs, dizzying and intoxicating. She looked up at him, heart thundering. “Alpha…” she mouthed. Kael’s throat tightened. Every part of him wanted to pull her close, to sink into that bond that sang between them like a thousand heartbeats. But then he saw Selena’s face in the crowd — the humiliation, the disbelief — and something snapped. He clenched his jaw. “This can’t be,” he said, voice low and deadly. Zion roared in his mind. “You dare reject what the Moon decreed?” But Kael was already raising his voice — for everyone to hear. “I, Alpha Kael of the Bloodmoon Pack,” he declared, eyes blazing, “reject you, Aderin, daughter of Ireti. You are not my mate!” Gasps rippled through the crowd. Mama Ireti’s hand flew to her mouth in horror. Aderin froze, unable to breathe. Her heart shattered, the bond burning like molten glass inside her chest. She felt the sting before the tears came — a soul being ripped in half. She stumbled backward, eyes wide, hands trembling. Kael turned away without another word, though his heart thundered with pain he couldn’t admit. Selena stepped forward, smirking in triumph, linking her arm with his. Behind them, Aderin fell to her knees as the torches flickered violently, reacting to her agony. Her wolf howled in her mind — a cry of loss that no one else could hear. > “Why…?” she mouthed into the night, her voice breaking though no sound came. No answer came. Only the moon watched, silent and unblinking. --- That night marked the death of her innocence — and the beginning of her legend.
