Chapter 18 I Am Sorry When Naanima was thinking of a way to break the news to Naav about the wedding,Raghu spoke, " Whatt!! Naav, don't tell me you didn't know about my marriage ?" Naav was taken aback, she was quite as she was reeling in the shock. She never expected that her own people would keep her in dark regarding her brother's wedding. Naanima said , " Naav, your brother is going to get married to Maithili." Now yet another shocking revelation took her breath away. Her brother is going to get married to her best friend and she was the last one to know about it.This didn't sit well with her. She was indeed happy that her brother was marrying her bestie but the fact that they kept it a secret from her bothered her to end. Naav snickered and said," Great news , congratulations ,Bhaiya. Well, as I am an outsider now there is no need to tell me. You could have just invited me for the wedding or perhaps even skip that ? Who am I afterall ? An insignificant sister of the Groom." Each word of her's was laiden with deep hurt. Everyone felt it. Naanima was deeply hurt too . It was because of her negligence that Naav was hurt today. She did'nt mean to keep it a secret. It was unintentional mistake. But how would she explain it to her? Neerav understood the situation and he said," Naav Beta, Naanima and myself were busy with too many things. It completely skipped our mind to let you know about it. I promise it will not happen again. Can you forgive us?" Being her Father, her elder he didn't hesitate to apologize to his daughter. Naav felt guilty for making her Dad apologize . She said. " Papa it is ok. Never say sorry to your children. It does'nt feel right." ****************************** At Varun Pathak's house Maithili was resting in her room. She felt crestfallen thinking of how her Mom had hurt her and was now in prison. She never wished bad for her mother even if she had hurt her. She never wanted her to go to prison. She thought how much all of these events had hurt her Father and her siblings. She was wallowing in the guilt when the door to her room opened and in walked her Father. Varun wanted to talk to her and ask her for forgiveness. He knew if he had intervened earlier and had put his wife in her place, it would'nt have come to this. His Son was right. But what is the point crying over the spilt milk? Now he has to do what he should have done a long time ago. He was determined to protect Maithili. Varun pulled up a chair and sat next to Maithili's bed and he said,"Maithili Beta, how are you feeling, does it still hurt ?" Maithili said, " Dad, I am ok." She did'nt know what to say ,she felt so guilty for her Mom was taken into the custody because of her, it was not her fault and her Mother deserved what she got but Maithili who was naive, kind hearted and selfless to a fault never felt that way. She always put others before her. Varun said," Maithili, I am sorry, Beta. I am really very sorry. I feel so ashamed of myself for not being there for you. Shalini has always been unfair to you and I did'nt stand up for you. I feared that she would leave us and go away and because of that fear I ruined everything. I am a sinner. I don't deserve to be called a father, Maithili. You lost your Mother even before you opened your eyes to the world and I instead of guarding you from this vicious world and showering you will the love and care of both the parents, I brought home, Shalini, as your Stepmom and pushed you into the abysmal depths of agony. Redemption is far fetched. No God will forgive me. I...I..don't... can't......" Varun couldn't talk further as he broke down into tears. Maithili said," Dad..Dad...please don't say that. Please don't cry. You are the best Dad. You are not a sinner. I have always loved you ,respected you. Never apologize to me. You never wronged me. If Mom did'nt treat me well ,it is not your fault." Varun felt worse about himself listening to his daughter. The girl was paragon of virtues. Despite everything that transpired she still didn't hold her father responsible. Never blamed him. How could she be so forgiving. Varun spoke, " Maithili, you are aware about your upcoming wedding I assume. Are you happy about it? Naanima told me that she talked to you about it and that you consented but I wanted to personally ask you and know your opinion. You know you can speak your mind, Beta. Marriage is a big decision, think carefully and decide. I will respect your decision. Maithili said," I have decided Dad, that I will marry Raghunandan. I have discussed it with Naanima too. I trust her,Dad." Varun said, " I agree with you. Naanima is a righteous women. Her decisions are well thought-out. I believe that you will be happy as a daughter in law in Kashyap's family. I am well assured of that and it is the biggest relief. As a Father all I want for my daughter is a loving family who will be there for her through thick and thin and can there be a family better than Kasyap's who can be all that ?what more can I ask for? You have my blessings, Maithili and also your Mother's. Wherever she is she will always watch out for you and bless you. Vrinda was a great women and would have been the most affectionate mother there could be but unfortunately she left us soon." Maithili craved for Mother's affection . She had missed her Mother miserably that she felt a gnawing hollowness in her heart. She had never met her, never had a chance of knowing her because Vrinda died due to amniotic fluid embolism when she gave birth to Maithili. She felt if her Mother would have been alive, how happy she would have been to see her daughter as a bride. She saw the Mother she craved for in Subhadra, Raghu and Naav's Mom when she was little and Subhadra was still alive and then it was Naanima for her. She loved and trusted Naanima with her life. When Naanima explained Maithili the reason behind getting her married to Raghu, she agreed without any qualms but she was not aware of the fact that this marriage was forced on Raghu.
