Maybe other she-wolves were lucky to have flutters in their belly when they look at their mates. But for me, my stomach was going in nuts as I stared at Alarick’s unyielding features. He was as cold as ice, and made me shiver inwardly. I was the Beta of my pack, and I should never fear anyone, but this man made me so nervous.
He rose his brow at me. "I didn’t think you have lost your speech after walking into my pack," he said coldly.
Taking a deep breath, I slowly stepped into his office. "I didn’t lose my speech, Alpha," I said slowly.
"That is good," he said sarcastically. "Now, what did you come here for?"
Without answering, I slowly walked around his table and tried to touch him, only for his hand to move quickly, holding mine firmly. A zing of electricity zapped through my hand at that very moment, but he swung it to the right like I had scalded him.
"What is this nonsense?"
"It’s not nonsense, Alpha Alarick," I said at once.
His blue eyes darkened on its own. He was visibly irritated by me, bur I would not step back after coming this far. I needed to find answers to my questions, and it was only him who could give that to me.
His fingers tussled his already roughed hair. "Beta Evelyn! Do you make it a point to go to Alphas of other packs to be so inappropriate? You know fully well that I don’t tolerate anyone stepping into my pack except there is a notice from the Alphas from their pack. So..."
"Please, enough of this Alpha Alarick," I cried as I took a step back, massaging my forehead to beat down my growing headache. "I believe you know that I’m your mate. You’re the damn Alpha, and if I can feel the connection between us, you can too!"
"Mind your language, Beta Evelyn," he said simply.
I slowly walked back to the front of the desk in disbelief. "Is that all you picked from that?" I asked slowly.
Alpha Alarick huffed as he leaned against the chair. He picked up his delicate looking pen and tweaked it repeatedly around his fingers. I tried to look away from the motion, but I couldn’t. He suddenly slammed the pen on the table, and this time, I looked up at his eyes. They were indifferent as though I was one of his staffs.
"I don’t need a mate," he said simply.
"Why?" I blurted out without thinking.
He leaned back on the table slowly, his eyes not leaving mine. "It’s none of your business. But, women are useless."
I flinched at his cold words. "Does that mean you like men?"
"I don’t care about what you think of me. I only want this forced bond between us to be..."
"No," I cried as I placed my hands over my ears.
I could see his mocking look. He definitely wouldn’t bat an eyelid to reject me right there, and my heart wouldn’t take it. I took several steps back, wondering if it was a mistake to come here like this.
"Don’t say anything," I added like an afterthought before I turned my back and ran as fast as I could out of the damn office, and the pack.
I could hear the members of the Moonlights Depths Pack trying to get my attention, but I didn’t stop. I simply ran as fast as I could out of there and through the forest of my pack. The soft waves of the tree did nothing to make me feel better today. All I wanted to do was cry so hard that I wouldn’t be able to get out of the mess I created for myself.
My wolf tried to reach out to me through our mind-link, but I mentally locked her out. I had no energy to listen to her words right now. I was too sad for that.
Selena had told me that we would find our mates, but she would never realise that I was almost on my way to getting rejected when I have been looking for my mate since I clocked 17. It was just not fair.
Suddenly, the pack house loomed even closer and I slid to a stop in front of it. I swallowed hard, feeling the scent of Alpha Raven and Gamma Liam. It was evident that they were still awake. I couldn’t go in there, looking like a mess. With a sigh, I cleaned my eyes quickly with the back of my hands, took a long shaky breath and moved as fast as I could to the door, hoping that Alpha Raven and Gamma Liam wouldn’t be anywhere near.
"You’re back!" Liam beamed the moment I opened the door.
I sighed as I took a step into the house. "I’m having a headache, Liam," I mumbled.
I was suddenly pulled by the arm and I turned to see Alpha Raven looking at me intensely. "Alpha..."
"Why did you go to meet Alpha Alarick? I’m curious because you saw him for the first time yesterday and you’ve been behaving quite strange," he served.
I pulled my hand away as I tried not to cry. "I don’t have the strength to talk right now, Alpha. Like I told Liam, I need to lie down. I’m not feeling too well."
I could feel his gaze on me, but I said nothing.
"Eve, do you need me to call the pack doctor?" He asked softly.
I tried to smile, but I could barely imagine how it would come out as I turned to him. "No, that is not needed. I would be in my room," I said softly.
"Ok, you can go."
I didn’t need to hear anything else as I ran as I could up the stairs, and towards my room. Closing the door firmly behind me, I leaned on it as tears rolled down my eyes. "Why does this have to happen to me?" I choked out as I slammed my head on my knees.
