CHAPTER 6

Lucy stared at Damian. “Someone opened my grave?” Damian nodded. “Yes.” Her heart raced. “But why?” “I don't know yet.” Elena suddenly stepped forward. “We need to leave.” Lucy looked at her. “Why?” “Because if they opened your grave, they are looking for something.” “What?” Elena shook her head. “I don't know.” Lucy laughed bitterly. “Everyone knows something except me.” Lucien moved closer. “Lucy, we need to get you somewhere safe.” She looked at him. “Safe? I've been hiding for five years. Somehow, trouble still found me.” “That's because you came back.” “I came back because I wanted answers.” “And now you have them.” Lucy frowned. “No. I have more questions.” Damian looked at Elena. “You said you knew who ordered the accident.” Elena's eyes became cold. “I said I knew who was involved.” “Then tell us.” Elena hesitated. Before she could answer, the lights suddenly went out. Lucy froze. “Not again.” Lucien grabbed her hand. “Stay close.” “I am close.” Damian pulled out his phone and turned on the flashlight. The room was silent. Then they heard three slow knocks. Knock. Knock. Knock. Lucy swallowed. “Please tell me that's the wind.” Lucien looked at the door. “The wind doesn't knock.” “Right. I knew that.” Elena moved closer to Lucy. “Don't open it.” Damian stepped toward the door. “Stay back.” A voice came from outside. “Lucy.” Lucy stopped breathing. She knew that voice. It was a woman's voice. Soft. Familiar. Terrifying. Elena grabbed her arm. “Don't answer.” The voice came again. “Lucy, I know you're there.” Lucy looked at Elena. “Who is that?” Elena whispered, “I don't know.” Lucy stared at her. “You're lying.” The door suddenly shook. Someone was trying to force it open. Damian stepped back. “Lucien, take them out through the back.” Lucien nodded. “Come on.” Lucy refused to move. “What about you?” “I'll follow.” “No.” Damian looked at her. “Lucy, please.” The door shook again. Lucy finally moved. They rushed toward the back exit. Just as Lucien opened the door, a loud gunshot came from the front of the building. Lucy screamed. Elena pulled her outside. They ran into the darkness. They didn't stop until they reached the car. Lucy turned around. “Where is Damian?” Lucien looked behind them. “He's coming.” Seconds later, Damian appeared. He was breathing heavily. Lucy rushed toward him. “Are you okay?” “Yes.” “Who was inside?” “I don't know.” Lucy stared at him. “You don't know?” “No.” “But you saw them?” Damian shook his head. “They ran.” Elena suddenly looked at Lucy. “Did you hear what the woman said?” Lucy nodded. “She called my name.” Elena's face became pale. “She knew you were there.” Lucy folded her arms. “You're hiding something.” Elena looked away. Lucy stepped closer. “Elena.” Her sister remained silent. “Tell me.” Elena sighed. “The woman who called you…” She paused. “She used to work for our father.” Lucy frowned. “Who?” “Mrs. Grace.” Damian's eyes narrowed. “Grace?” Elena nodded. “She was Father's personal assistant.” Lucy searched her memory. “I remember her.” “She disappeared after the accident.” “Why?” “She knew too much.” Lucy felt a chill. “What did she know?” Elena looked at Damian. “She knew what happened the night Lucy disappeared.” Damian's expression hardened. “Where is she now?” “I don't know.” Lucien suddenly laughed. Everyone looked at him. “What?” He shook his head. “Nothing.” Lucy frowned. “Why did you laugh?” “Because every person in your family either disappears or dies.” Lucy stared at him. “That isn't funny.” “I know.” “But you still laughed.” “I was nervous.” She sighed. “Fair enough.” Damian looked toward the road. “We can't stay here.” “Where are we going?” “Somewhere they won't find us.” Lucy crossed her arms. “And where is that?” Damian looked at her. “My old house.” Lucy stared at him. “You have another house?” “Yes.” “How many houses do you have?” Damian shrugged. “Enough.” Lucy shook her head. “Rich people are strange.” Lucien smiled. “Finally, something we agree on.” They got into the car. For the first time, Lucy sat between Damian and Lucien. Neither man said a word. The silence was uncomfortable. Lucy looked from one to the other. “If you two start fighting, I'm jumping out.” Lucien smiled. “I wasn't planning to.” Damian looked at him. “I was.” Lucy sighed. “Of course you were.” The car drove through the quiet streets. Lucy looked out the window. Her mind kept returning to Elena. Her sister was alive. Her father might not have died when everyone thought he did. Her death certificate had been signed before the accident. And now someone had opened her grave. Nothing made sense. Then her phone buzzed. She looked down. Unknown number. A message appeared. **YOU FOUND YOUR SISTER.** Lucy froze. Another message came. **NOW ASK HER WHY SHE LEFT YOU TO DIE.** Her hands began shaking. She slowly turned toward Elena. “Elena?” Elena looked at her. “What?” Lucy held up the phone. “Why did you leave me to die?” Elena's face went completely white. Damian turned around. “What happened?” Elena looked at Lucy with tears in her eyes. “I didn't leave you.” “Then what happened?” Elena swallowed. “They made me choose.” Lucy stared at her. “Choose what?” Elena's voice broke. “Your life…” She paused. “…or mine.” The car became silent. Lucy felt a cold fear move through her body. Then Elena whispered, “And I chose yours.”
