CHAPTER 5

“The person who ordered it…” Elena's voice shook. “…was someone you trusted.” Lucy stared at her, waiting for the name. Her heart was pounding so hard that she could hear it in her ears. “Who?” Elena opened her mouth, but Damian suddenly stepped forward. “That's enough.” Lucy turned toward him. “No. It's not.” “Lucy, you're exhausted.” “I don't care!” She pointed at Elena. “She knows who tried to kill me. You know something too. And both of you keep looking at each other like I'm the only person in this room who doesn't understand what's happening.” Lucien sighed. “She has a point.” Damian glared at him. “You're not helping.” “I wasn't trying to.” Lucy almost rolled her eyes. “Can everyone stop acting like this is a family meeting?” Nobody laughed. “Fine,” she muttered. “I tried.” She turned back to Elena. “Tell me the name.” Elena's eyes moved toward Damian. “Your father.” Lucy froze. “My father?” Elena nodded. “Your father ordered the accident.” Lucy stared at her. “That can't be true.” “I saw the documents.” “My father loved me.” Elena's expression softened. “Sometimes the people who say they love us are the ones who hurt us the most.” Lucy shook her head. “No.” She stepped backward. “My father died before the accident.” “I know.” “Then how could he order it?” Elena didn't answer. Damian finally spoke. “Because he didn't die when everyone thought he did.” Lucy turned sharply. “What?” Damian looked at Elena. “How much do you know?” “Enough.” “Then tell her everything.” Elena took a deep breath. “Your father was involved with dangerous people. He owed them money, but that wasn't the worst part. He had information they wanted.” Lucy frowned. “What information?” “I don't know.” “You expect me to believe that?” “I saw him arguing with a man the night before the accident.” “Who?” Elena hesitated. “Mr. Hale.” Damian's face hardened. “My father's lawyer?” “Yes.” Lucy stared at Damian. “You said he died three years ago.” “He did.” Elena shook her head. “No. He disappeared.” Damian looked at her. “What are you saying?” “His death was another lie.” Silence filled the room. Lucy slowly sat down. She felt like her entire life had become one giant lie. “My father isn't dead.” Elena didn't answer. “Is he?” “I don't know.” Lucy covered her face with her hands. “This is insane.” Lucien sat beside her. “I know.” She looked at him. “No, you don't.” He stayed quiet. “You all knew things about me before I even remembered them.” “Not everything.” “But enough.” “Yes.” Lucy laughed without humor. “Wonderful.” She stood up. “I want to go home.” Damian looked at her. “Which home?” Lucy stared at him. “That was not funny.” “I know.” “Good.” For the first time that night, Damian almost smiled. But the moment didn't last. A loud sound came from outside. Everyone froze. Lucien stood immediately. “Stay here.” Lucy frowned. “Again?” “Lucy.” “Fine.” He moved toward the window and carefully looked outside. Nothing. No cars. No people. Just darkness. “It's clear.” Damian walked toward the door. “I'm checking the building.” Lucy grabbed his sleeve. “Don't go alone.” He looked down at her hand. “Are you worried about me?” She immediately let go. “No.” Damian raised an eyebrow. “Your hand was holding my shirt.” “I was stopping you from doing something stupid.” “That's still worrying.” Lucy rolled her eyes. “Go.” Damian walked away. Lucien looked at her. “You still care about him.” Lucy glared. “Don't start.” “I didn't say anything bad.” “You were thinking it.” Lucien smiled. “You're getting to know me.” “Unfortunately.” Before he could respond, Elena suddenly gasped. Lucy turned. “What?” Elena was staring at the floor. There was blood on her shoe. Lucy looked down. “That's not yours, is it?” Elena shook her head. “No.” Lucien immediately drew closer. “Where did it come from?” Elena slowly pointed toward the hallway. Everyone followed the trail of blood. One drop. Then another. Then another. It led to a small storage room. Lucien opened the door. A man was lying on the floor. Lucy covered her mouth. It was one of the men who had attacked the house. He was alive, but barely. Damian crouched beside him. “Who sent you?” The man coughed. “Too late.” Damian grabbed his shirt. “Who sent you?” The man smiled. “She knows.” His eyes moved toward Lucy. Then he stopped breathing. Lucy stared at the body. “What did he mean?” Damian stood. “I don't know.” Lucy shook her head. “No.” She looked at him. “He looked at me when he said it.” Elena's face suddenly went pale. “He recognized you.” Lucy turned toward her. “Why?” Elena didn't answer. “Why did he recognize me?” Elena swallowed. “Because you were there.” “Where?” “The night of the accident.” Lucy felt another sharp pain in her head. Rain. Headlights. A man's hand on her shoulder. A voice whispering, “Don't trust Damian.” Lucy gasped. She stumbled backward. Damian caught her. “What happened?” She pushed him away. “You.” Damian froze. “What?” “I heard your name.” “When?” “In my memory.” Damian stared at her. “What did you hear?” Lucy looked into his eyes. “Someone told me not to trust you.” His face went pale. Lucien stepped forward. “Lucy, don't force yourself to remember.” She ignored him. “Was it you?” Damian shook his head. “No.” “Were you there?” He didn't answer. Lucy stared at him. “Damian.” “Yes.” Her heart sank. “You were there.” “Yes.” “What happened?” He looked away. “I found you after the crash.” “That's not what I asked.” “I know.” “Then answer me!” Damian closed his eyes. “You were alive.” Lucy stopped breathing. “What?” “You were alive when I found you.” Tears filled her eyes. “Then why did you bury me?” Damian looked at her. “I didn't.” Lucy froze. “What?” “I never buried you.” She looked toward Elena. Elena nodded slowly. “He's telling the truth.” Lucy shook her head. “Then whose grave did I see?” Nobody answered. A cold silence filled the room. Then Damian's phone rang. He answered. “Hello?” The person on the other end said something. Damian's face changed. “Where?” He listened. “I'm coming.” He ended the call. Lucy stepped closer. “What happened?” Damian looked at her. “They found the grave.” “What grave?” “Yours.” Lucy's stomach dropped. “But I don't have a grave.” Damian's eyes darkened. “You do.” He looked at Elena. “And someone just opened it.” Elena's face went white. Lucy whispered, “Why?” Damian looked at her. “Because they weren't looking for your body.” He paused. “They were looking for something buried with you.”
