I had my mind fixed on the mission: bring the æye to the vampires and look for the werewolf that killed my father. It was like killing two birds with a single stone, but this stone wasn't a stone, it was a sword. I looked at the sword that once belonged to my father. It was made of pure silver, with inscriptions that looked more mysterious as I stared. I never knew what those words meant, whether they were magical or just gibberish. No one else in the clans knew what they meant either, not even the council.
I looked at the sword and stared at my reflection. My hair had gotten darker, my skin as pale as the very vampires with whom I sat in that car. My skin felt harder than it was before, but I could still feel the warmth of blood flowing through my veins. It did not feel cold to me, unlike how the skin of vampires felt like when I was still human.
The council gave strict orders. After I turned, they gave me the location of the æye. They showed me his picture and I wondered how young he was, eighteen or maybe twenty? I looked at his eyes and they suddenly caught my attention. They looked familiar in a way. But it was my first time seeing this boy so I shook off the feeling. Besides, if I got him to the vampires, it was still my responsibility of making sure he does exactly what he was meant to do: break our curse.
The fact that we had a curse was something that baffled me. How did it come to be? What happened? The oldest texts dated some hundreds of years back but none of the spoke about this curse. There was no single reference about how it came to be. For something so important, it was weird that it would just disappear from the scripts. Deep down, I knew something was fishy. I had to find out eventually after I have captured the æye.
The car suddenly stopped in front of a barbershop. At my left, I saw an eight storey building. It was the same with what they had shown me. This was his place. I stepped out of the car and walked inside the first floor. There were tons of humans there, each going about their own business. Everything would have been great if they didn't smell so good. I could hear their hearts beating, the blood rushing through their veins, inviting me to take a bite. The pull was enormous. It was compulsive. Suddenly, I felt my focus on an athletic man In a suit. He looked good in the suit and his blood gave out the most inviting smell. It was so intense that I felt myself being mesmerised by my own feelings. I started to take slow steps, fixing my gaze on him. I watched him closely as he continued to chat about something I didn't care about with his friends. I just wanted to take a little bite. Not much. Just little. Before I knew it, I was standing before him. He raised his head up and saw me looking at him. He smiled as he thought I was checking him out. His friends all began jeering. As I looked, I felt my fangs getting longer. They grew so long it began to hurt my lower lips. I had to open my mouth to allow it roam free. That would probably ruin everything, all the secrecy the vampire clan has ever kept, all of that would be ruined, but I did not care. I simply couldn't care.
"Draul, he's not in his room." Anton, the vampire that had taken me to the council suddenly said to me. I didn't even notice him coming. I was so focused on my intent that the world seemed to stop for a while. I felt my fangs retreat and my intent fade away. That was a nice save. I nearly lost it. The man and his friends were still looking, but I saw a flicker of confusion on their faces.
"Your eyes. How did you get those contacts off right now?" The man asked.
"Oh, you're going to harass a lady now about her fashion taste? And to think I actually liked you." I scoffed, rolled my eyes and walked away like I was human. Anton followed me closely. I had to act normal. I couldn't allow them suspect a thing. Perhaps my eyes had turned red when I was glaring at him, and when Anton came, the shade was suddenly gone.
"We will wait for him outside. We will grab him as he's coming back. It was will swift and easy." I said to Anton. He nodded as we walked back to the car. Another van of vampires was waiting. Vlad said it was for unforseen circumstances, but what I actually thought was that they were there to make sure what almost happened with the man did not happen. A newly turned vampire has the greatest temptation to killing a human. And even though I was the Draul, I was a newly turned vampire. And a strong one at that.
We didn't wait for long before I saw the boy coming towards us. He had a cap on his head and he held a bag which I presumed possibly contained a weapon. I knew of the kind of life he was living. The vamores were very detailed in their description. But suddenly, I sensed something, no, someone, a werewolf. I took a deeper breath and took in the smell, husky but at the same time very appealing. Intoxicating. What was wrong with me? Was this a side effect of being a vampire also? Did all werewolves smell like this?
I looked around but I did not see any werewolf. The boy was walking in, the two vampires I placed to grab him were already in position. They were just waiting for the order. But I wanted to fish the werewolf out. If it was here for the same purpose, then eliminating it was the best idea.
"He's closing in. What do we do Draul?" One of the vampires on standby said.
"Let him go in, then follow him." I said
"I'm sorry Draul, I do not quite follow." The vampire said again
"There is a werewolf here. I can sense it. I think it's here for the boy also. I want to expose it and kill it. Now do as I say." I ordered the vampires who wasted no time in following the boy in the moment we walked into the first floor. I waited for while, looking around with my enhanced vision, hoping to see the werewolf. Suddenly, I saw a man walking inside. I looked at him closely. He wasn't a man at all. He was a werewolf. Then when he turned briefly to look over his shoulder, I saw who it was. Those eyes, I could never forget those eyes. The eyes that haunted me every night before I slept. The eyes I could not turn away from. They looked at me from every direction and no matter how far I run, they are still looking. The eyes of the prime alpha that took my father. The eyes I would pluck out with my knife tonight.
I wanted to follow him but Anton quickly held my hand. I looked at the hand and then at him before I grabbed him with the other and raised him up, feet off the ground. He was like a doll in my hand. I could easily toss him away.
"I know you are angry, but there are humans here. We do not act in the presence of the humans. " He managed to say. I let go of him and he quickly gave orders to other vampires to follow the prime alpha. These vampires were highly trained in combat, the best of the bests.
"Use any means necessary to get that boy." I said to them as they went inside. Anton was right, we shouldn't act in the presence of humans but that would have worked if there wasn't a prime alpha here on the same mission as we are. So when I began to hear gunshots from the seventh floor, I simply smiled as I picked up my riffle. The bullets were silver, the werewolves' deadly poison. Anton grabbed a gun and aimed at the entrance. I knew there was no way they would come out from there. So I pointed my gun up towards a window I suspected. And I was right.
The werewolf jumped down from a window unhurt but the boy seemed to be in bad shape. He flung the boy over his shoulder but more vampires opened fire. I waited for my moment, my perfect opportunity. He soon dashed into a car and that was when I pointed my gun at him. He saw me and as our eyes locked, I felt a sudden tingling all over my body. It was powerful, seductive. I felt helpless and it felt like I was being drawn to him. What sort of magic is this? I took the shot but I missed. The first shot I'd missed since I began to use guns. There was more to what was happening. I was sure of it. It was like he had me under his spell. But could werewolves do that? There was no way they could do that.
He began to drive the car towards me, our eyes still locked. The feeling still persisted but I jumped over the car. I looked at him with anger, disgust, and with fear. I was afraid of what I was feeling, how he made me feel. I had to break his spell over me and I had to do it soon. Otherwise, it would compromise me. I couldn't have the vampires doubt me. They'd probably began to already for I just lost the æye to a single prime alpha. But not to worry, I was surprised once, it would never happen again.
Anton and the other vampires walked up to me and stood by my side. They were frustrated, perhaps disappointed in me but the fight wasn't over. It had barely begun.
"What do we do now Draul?" Anton asked.
"Ofcourse we will follow them. Get the cars. I do not want to loose their scent. Everyone keep your eyes sharp." I barked orders at the vampires. I couldn't afford to show weakness.
"He is a prime alpha. He is good at escaping." Anton said to me.
"It's just one werewolf against us, prime alpha or not. I will find him and I will get the boy. He won't escape next time."
He wouldn't, for next time I saw him, I'd be Killing him myself.
