The cold wind blew past me as I made my way towards the fence in this heavily guarded mansion. The gates were fortified with some wiring that could conduct electric shocks if it wasn't turned off in the control room. If a person happened to be electrocuted, the bolts would be exhausted and it will take a little while before the charge come back up. But I did not want to be that person. My best shot was to scale fence, kill some guards and head for my target.
I used the darkness as my cover, hurled myself up and scales the fence as stealthily as I could. Things would have gone sideways if the guard that was supposed to be on the spot where I landed hadn't moved. I watched him carefully as he did, then I drew my knife, dashed to him and slit his throat. I covered his mouth with my hand to prevent any noise from escaping. I lay him on the ground and shifted my gaze to the manor. There were about five more men standing guard with guns and dogs. Dogs, I really hated them. But I had to find another way to the building without a confrontation.
I have been doing this job since I was thirteen years old. It was something I was born into and had grown to love. And because of the fact that I was so good at it, I managed to make it to the top of the chain. Now I was thirty years old but I could still remember the first time I came to the convent, the first time I took a life and how good it felt.
I was born to vampire parents. My birth has always been seen as a miracle in the vampire clans. Vampires could not have children. They were as sterile as the very instruments that could cause sterility. So when I was born, everyone practically worshiped me. As my birth was an unusual one, it led to the death of my mother during childbirth. Father told me she named me Alexandra before she died.
But something else was unusual about me. I was born a human. My father saw this as a temptation to his clan and to himself. Vampires could barely control themselves when presented with blood, and a little pretty thing such as myself would probably be drained even before I saw the light of the day. So father made the decision to take me to the convent, which was actually a front for an organization which trained girls to become killers.
"I do not want to go father. I do not want to leave you." I said to him as I held his hand tightly. My ponytail hung behind my head. I tied it with a red ribbon, which was my mother's favorite colour.
"You must my child. For your own safety." Father said.
"Why don't you make me one of you? I can help here. I can kill the werewolves."
"I have no doubt you will make an excellent vampire. Even greater than I am. But I am afraid turning you isn't up to me."
"Why? Aren't you the Draul? You can do anything."
"Your birth was a wonder. It corresponds exactly to the prophecy about the chosen one. The one that will save all vampires from the rabid werewolves."
"You think I am that person father?"
"I do not know."
"You are the Draul. No vampire is more powerful than you are. You are the savior of the vampires not me. So please just turn me and let me stay with you."
He drew me in and hugged me tightly. His body was cold like a corpse's but I have been surrounded by vampires since birth so I was used to it already.
"I want you to become more powerful than I am. That is why I am sending you there. This is the best way to protect you and everyone else" He whispered into my ears as the sisters of the convent came and took me away. I tried to look back when the car departed but the sisters made sure my gaze was fixed on the road. I wanted to cry but I couldn't. I did not want to show weakness. If it was father's desires that I became formidable, then that is exactly what I would become, I said to myself. So I trained harder than every other girl at the convent. I topped at every lesson and I never failed a single assignment. I was hardened, strong, broken patched.
The sisters did not know what my father was or what I carried in my veins. It was their sole mission to groom the girl till she was of age to decide if she wanted to stay or go back home. They did not care about anything else except the money they received for their teachings. Hell, the girl may be the child of the devil himself, they did not want to know. Father never visited but he called me once a month. He would ask about training and my assignments and I would tell him how much I missed him. Then he would assure me i'll be back home soon, I just needed to get stronger. So I pushed myself beyond my limits. I had all hopes until father was killed by werewolves during the last great battle between the species.
That fateful night, I finished my assignment early and decided to pay an unprecedented visit to father. I wanted to show him what a fine assassin I had become. But when I got to the house, I saw a massive war ravaging the mansion. I wanted to do something, but then I remembered I couldn't do much. As good an assassin as I was back then, I was still just a human. Werewolves and vampires were faster and stronger and I had no chance against them. Then I saw father fighting this werewolf. It had green eyes and I knew it was a prime alpha, one of the strongest and deadliest werewolves. Father seemed to be having the upper hand against the beast until the werewolf dug it's claws into father's guts. It slowed him down enough for the werewolf to try biting his neck. Father blocked the attack with his arm and groaned when the mighty teeth tore his flesh. The werewolf dug the other hand into father's chest and ripped out his heart. I watched as father turned to ash.
The werewolf transformed back to its human form. It was just a young man, probably about twenty five or twenty six. He sustained heavy injuries from the fight and he fell to the ground. Our eyes suddenly met as he passed out. I didn't do anything. I just his as the werewolves won the war. Then when vampires began to flee, I left as well. Father dying before my eyes was supposed to make me cry, but I didn't. I just left and every night, I would have nightmares about the scene. I would see his ash being scattered to the wind and I would see the prime alpha that killed him. Then I wake up to an anger to destroy the prime alpha that took my father. I tried making connections with vampires but they seemed to be extinct. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't find any. So eventually, I just stopped looking.

The dogs sensed my presence. I quickly hid behind a sculpture as they barked. The guards handling the dogs somehow suspected foul play. They then let the dogs lead the way and they headed towards me. I brought out a silent pistol and waited for them to come closer. I heard the men chat in Russian, they seemed to be talking about a football game and a certain star player. It was always so funny how men somehow picked a sporty fellow and idolize that person. The orphanage had a television but the time for watching was general. And we did not watch more than movies with Assassination themes. The sisters said it was a form of teaching. We replicate what we see on the big screen.
Immediately the guards and their angry dogs came into my view, I quickly killed the dogs and shot the guards at the neck. It was so quick that they didn't see it coming. But some other guards at the other side of the fence saw their comrades collapsing. When they started to rush towards us, I made way to the building itself.
I had a detailed plan of the room I was to find my target. I wasted no time in carefully eluding the maids and guards that still roamed around the house even at that time. Then I headed for the master bedroom. The door was unlocked and I stealthily went inside. My target sat on a chair, his back turned to me. He was sniffing some cocaine as I carefully approached.
"Get me the alcohol already, you swine!"
He cursed at whoever was supposed to get the alcohol. Turns out, he thought that was the person approaching. I was quite impressed he heard me coming even with my stealth. I did want more surprises so I hurled at him and drove a knife into his throat. I felt his body vibrate from the pain and he suddenly kicked an empty glass to the ground. As it shattered, I heard the guards making their way towards the room. They had discovered the men I killed and they knew an assassin was in their perimeter.
My target was eradicated so I just needed to escape. I opened the window and jumped out. As soon as my feet touched the ground, bright lights were suddenly turned on around the entire house. It was so bring that it eradicated every shadow and there was no hiding place. I was exposed.
Behind me, guards were tripping into my targets room and ahead of me, guards were closing in. They held large guns and did not hesitate to fire the moment they saw me. I began to run as I received fire from every side. My only change of escaping was to go through the same route through which I came in. The fence. A large man was already positioned by the gate, holding an AK. Other guards stood besides the fence. It was as if they read my intentions. They boxed me in. I couldn't fight my way out of this, they were too many and they had good guns as well. There was only one alternative, I had to go through the gate.
I ran straight for the large man who did not waste time to open fire on me. I dodged some of the bullets and brought out my gun. The other men by the fence joined in as well as those from behind me. I was so close to death. Then a bullet hit my shoulder. I cried out in pain but I didn't stop. I began to shoot at the large man and a headshot blew his brains out. I doubled my speed. Before he collapsed, I jumped and sent a kick straight into his chest which hurled him into the gate. The corpse was electrocuted and that gave me a window to escape. Another bullet flew past my face, burning me as I stepped on the man's head, grabbed hold of the gate and hoist myself up. I scales it and headed for my bike but it turned out some guards were waiting outside as well. They had predicted I would escape so they destroyed my tires. I didn't see them coming. Before I could dodge, another bullet hit my shoulder again. I grabbed my knife and shot it at the one who had fired the gun. He died instantly. Then another opened fire behind me. The bullets hit my back and I could feel myself loosing air. I fell to the ground as my own death drew near. In that moment, I saw my father. He was standing, dressed in his robes. His hands were at first extended but suddenly, he took them back and began to walk away. I tried to call him, to tell me not to leave but I couldn't say a word. The paralysis my body experienced had somehow spread to my mouth. I just lay as I suddenly saw the guards being attacked by something. Then, as I saw a vampire draining a guard dry, I drifted into the darkness.
My eyes opened as I suddenly perceived the scent of blood. I rolled my eyes to the direction the smell had come from. There was a cup full of blood placed on a table just a few feet from the bed I was sleeping on. I stood up and headed for the blood and just as I was about grabbing it, the door opened and a young man walked in. He was bald with rather large eyes that were standing almost as obviously as his cheek bones. His lips were plump and pink and the angle of his jaw sharp. He was truly good looking for a man. The strong scent of the blood literally begging me to consume it distracted me again and I turned my face back to the cup. I took it and drank every single content. It felt like being alive for the first time. I slowly began to breath again and my skin which had become rigid regained it's elasticity. I suddenly noticed my bullet wounds were gone and that burn on my face disappeared. I began to see with a higher vision, my sense of smell greatly increased and I could smell the young man's outfit from where I was. Then the realization suddenly hit me. I had become a vampire.
The young man bowed before me and stood at ease as another person walked into the room. This was a much older man with wrinkles on his face. His face had a skeletal outline and the fangs that extended from his mouth made him a little bit frightening. He walked closer to me and took my hand. I watched as he licked the back of my hand and bit it sharply. I expected myself to have squirmed from that but I almost didn't feel anything. That made me amazed.
"You did not feel that pain, did you? Well, I wasn't expecting anything less from the chosen one." He said and held his head up high.
"Who are you? What is this place?" I asked
"I am Vlad. One of the members of the council. I have come here to welcome you into the vampire community Alexandra. You see, I knew your father. We all did. I kept tabs on you after his death.
"I don't understand. Did you turn me?"
"No. And neither did Anton, which you have already met by now." He stretched his bony hand to the young man.
"I sent him to bring you in after your assignment tonight, but he had to intervene when you were in trouble. The truth is, you died this evening from those gunshots. When you died, your body began your transformation on its own. You woke up a vampire just now."
"That is not possible. I must be bitten before I transform." I said. That was supposed to be the case.
"That is why you are the chosen one. I'm afraid the time for arguments is over Alex. The time has come for you to fulfil your destiny."
"Which is?"
"Getting us the æye. It has finally manifested itself."
I heard father talking about the æye when I was still a child. I never really knew what it was.
"What is that?" I asked
"Thousands of years ago, an unknown event caused the existence of the vampires and the werewolves. The vampires had this allergy to the sun while the werewolves had their lunar madness. The cures to those allergies are inside the blood of the mortal enemies. But, legend has it that a person, the æeye will be able to transfer the cure from one species to another species causing the healing of that species. It is magic. My scientists have tried to separate the cure from werewolf blood but they haven't even been able to identify the cure."
"What makes you believe any of this?"
"Because I have been following this mission for years. When you were born your father and I suspected you were the chosen one, the vampire prophesied to bring deliverance to us. But until today, the æye did not manifest. But you were also born a human and your father kicked against the idea of turning you at a younger age. He wanted you to grow and experience the world before you ventured into it."
Vlad walked closer to me.
"I know you have questions and doubts. They will be answered. You are our only hope of surviving. If the werewolves get their hands on the æye, then the vampires are done for. Including you. Your father was a Draul during his time and now you are one. It will also be an opportunity to take revenge on the werewolf who killed him."
The last statement filled me with anger. I suddenly remembered the look on father's face as that werewolf ripped his heart out. I always wanted to avenge his death, and now that I was a vampire, I had the power to do so. This man called me a Draul,so that meant I was powerful enough to kill a prime alpha. And as for the mission, I had no other choice but to comply. My survival was based on it and I did not want to die before I had the chance to rip out the werewolf's heart.
"I need every detail you can get on this æye."
My killer instincts kicked in. Now I wasn't just an assassin, I was also a vampire. And I was coming for him!
