The days passed in a blur, marked by endless training sessions and Kael’s relentless insistence that Luna be prepared for what was coming. Though she’d managed to summon her powers, controlling them was a different battle altogether. They were unpredictable, wild—like a storm contained within her, threatening to break free at the slightest provocation.
Kael watched over her with unwavering intensity, his golden eyes always sharp, always calculating. There was a constant tension between them, an unspoken pull that Luna couldn’t deny. The bond they shared was undeniable, but Kael kept it buried beneath layers of stoicism and restraint. He was distant yet protective, cold yet fiercely attentive. Luna hated how much she noticed.
But there was no time to dwell on feelings when danger loomed.
It was nearing dusk when Kael burst into the training room, his expression darker than usual. His jaw was clenched, and his posture was rigid—signs Luna had come to recognize as warnings. Something was wrong.
“They’re here,” he growled, pacing like a caged beast. His voice was low, but the words echoed in Luna’s chest. “The Crescent Fang Pack. They’ve crossed into our territory.”
Luna felt her stomach tighten. “What do they want?”
Kael shot her a look that said the answer was obvious. “You.”
Her heart raced. Despite all her training, she wasn’t ready—not for this.
Kael’s lieutenants entered the room behind him, their expressions grim. They were tall, broad, and radiated power. Luna had met them briefly during her time here—Liam, the stoic strategist with piercing gray eyes, and Aria, fierce and sharp-tongued with a scar that ran down the side of her face. They were Kael’s most trusted warriors, and seeing worry etched into their features did little to ease Luna’s fear.
“They’re camped near the Hollow Creek border,” Liam reported. “Scouts say they’ve got at least fifteen wolves with them, maybe more hiding in the woods.”
“Do they know she’s here?” Aria asked, her gaze flicking to Luna.
Kael’s jaw tightened. “They wouldn’t have crossed into our land if they didn’t.”
Luna swallowed hard. “What… what are they going to do?”
Kael turned to her, stepping closer until he was towering over her, his presence as suffocating as it was comforting. “They’ll try to take you. By force if necessary.”
The words hit her like ice water.
“But why me? Why am I so important to them?”
Kael’s eyes darkened, shadows flickering in their depths. “Because you’re not just the key to breaking my curse. You’re something more. Something ancient. Your bloodline—there’s power in it. Power they crave.”
Luna’s mind raced. She thought about her parents, about the life she’d lived believing she was just an ordinary girl. Was it all a lie?
Before she could ask more questions, Kael gave an order. “We move now.”
The pack sprang into action with seamless precision. Weapons were gathered—not swords or guns, but silver blades, enchanted artifacts, and talismans etched with runes. Luna felt a surge of adrenaline as she followed Kael out into the fading light, the cold evening air biting at her skin.
The forest was alive with tension. Every rustle of leaves, every snap of a twig sent Luna’s heart racing. She could feel the magic in the air, thick and oppressive, like the world itself was holding its breath.
Kael moved like a shadow, silent and lethal, his golden eyes glowing faintly in the dim light. His presence was a constant anchor, but even that didn’t quell the fear clawing at Luna’s chest.
They reached a ridge overlooking Hollow Creek. Below, figures moved between the trees—dark, swift, and predatory. The Crescent Fang Pack.
Kael crouched beside Luna, his expression carved from stone. “Stay close to me. No matter what happens, don’t run.”
Luna nodded, though her body trembled. She wasn’t sure if it was from fear or the surge of magic building inside her.
Without another word, Kael descended the ridge, his lieutenants flanking him. Luna followed, her heart pounding with every step.
They met the enemy in a clearing bathed in moonlight. The Crescent Fang wolves were formidable—tall, scarred, with eyes that gleamed with malice. Their leader stepped forward, a man with sharp features, cruel eyes, and a grin that made Luna’s skin crawl.
“Kael Draven,” the man sneered. “Still hiding behind curses and broken promises?”
Kael’s lip curled in a snarl. “You’re trespassing.”
The man laughed, his gaze flicking to Luna. “We’re not here for your cursed land. We’re here for her.”
Luna felt Kael shift, his muscles tensing like a coiled spring. “She’s under my protection.”
“She doesn’t belong to you,” the man shot back. “She belongs to all of us. Her power is wasted with you.”
Kael didn’t respond with words. He shifted.
The transformation was instant, violent. One moment he was human; the next, he was a towering black wolf with golden eyes burning like embers. His growl rumbled through the clearing, primal and terrifying.
The battle erupted.
Wolves lunged from both sides, colliding with the sound of snapping jaws and snarling rage. Luna stumbled back, her heart racing, panic clawing at her throat. But then she saw Kael—her Kael—fighting with unmatched ferocity. He was a blur of teeth and claws, ruthless and unrelenting.
A Crescent Fang wolf broke through the chaos, charging straight at Luna.
Instinct took over.
She didn’t think. She didn’t plan. She just reacted.
Magic surged through her like wildfire, crackling beneath her skin. She thrust her hands forward, and a burst of blinding light erupted from her palms, slamming into the wolf with a force that sent it flying backward, unconscious before it hit the ground.
The clearing fell silent for a heartbeat.
Everyone turned to stare—both friend and foe.
Luna stood trembling, her hands glowing faintly, her chest heaving with ragged breaths. She’d done that. She had unleashed that power.
Kael shifted back into his human form, his chest bare, blood streaked across his skin, but his eyes—his golden eyes—were locked on her with something fierce and undeniable.
Pride. And something else.
Possession.
“You’re stronger than I thought,” he murmured, his voice low, his gaze never leaving hers. “But this is just the beginning.”
And Luna knew he was right.
Because the enemy wasn’t gone. They’d be back.
And next time, they wouldn’t just be after her powers.
They’d be after her soul.
