Chapter 8: The Mark of Darkness

850 Words
The woods grew eerily silent after the battle, save for the faint crackle of dying flames and the distant rustle of leaves. The metallic scent of blood lingered in the cold night air, mingling with the earthy aroma of pine and ash. The pack shifted back into their human forms, their bodies bruised and bloodied, but their attention wasn’t on the fallen enemies—it was on her. Luna could feel their eyes, filled with suspicion, fear, and something she couldn’t quite name. She tried to stand, but her legs wobbled beneath her, weakened by exhaustion and something else—something darker. Kael was immediately at her side, his strong arms catching her before she collapsed. “I’ve got you,” he whispered, his voice low but filled with a tenderness that made her heart ache. His warmth seeped into her, grounding her as he helped her sit on a nearby log. The world around her felt distant, like she was underwater, everything muffled and distorted. But there was one thing she couldn’t ignore—a searing pain on her forearm where the cloaked stranger had touched her. She glanced down, gasping softly. A dark mark had appeared on her skin, a symbol burned into her flesh. It wasn’t just a bruise or a scar—it glowed, faintly pulsing like it was alive. The symbol looked ancient, circular with jagged edges, spiraling inward like a vortex of shadows. Kael’s eyes darkened when he saw it. His jaw clenched, and his fingers brushed the mark gently, his touch sending a strange current through her. “This is dark magic,” he murmured, his voice barely more than a growl. “A claiming mark.” “A what?” Luna’s voice trembled, both from fear and the lingering effects of the battle. Aric stepped forward, his face grim. “It’s a curse. A mark used by dark witches to bind someone to them. But this one is different… older. It’s not just a mark—it’s a claim on her soul.” Luna’s heart raced. “What does that mean?” Kael stood abruptly, his posture tense and his fists clenched at his sides. “It means someone powerful wants you for themselves. And they’re willing to unleash dark forces to get you.” The words hit her like a slap. She didn’t want any of this—the powers, the curse, the danger. She just wanted her normal life back. But deep down, she knew that was no longer possible. Kael paced, his expression torn between rage and frustration. Finally, he turned to her, his golden eyes fierce. “We’ll find whoever did this, and we’ll remove the mark. I swear it.” Luna nodded, though doubt gnawed at her heart. The mark felt… permanent, like it had rooted itself deep within her. As the pack tended to the wounded, Kael led Luna back to the cabin. The night was colder now, the shadows deeper. Inside, the fire cast a warm glow, but it couldn’t chase away the chill that settled in Luna’s bones. Kael sat beside her, his gaze fixed on the mark. His fingers brushed against it again, softer this time, like he was afraid to hurt her. “Does it hurt?” he asked quietly. Luna nodded slightly. “It’s like… it’s burning from the inside.” Kael’s jaw tightened. “I’ve seen magic like this before. It’s ancient, forbidden. Whoever marked you—they’re not just after your powers. They want you.” Luna swallowed hard, fear coiling in her chest. “Why me? I’m not special. I’m just… me.” Kael’s gaze softened, his fingers lingering on her arm. “You’re more than you think, Luna. You’ve always been more. Your blood, your soul—it’s tied to something ancient. That’s why you’re my fated mate. And that’s why they want you.” The words hung between them, heavy and undeniable. Luna looked into his eyes, searching for answers, for something solid to hold onto in the storm that had become her life. “What if we can’t break it? What if I’m stuck with this… curse forever?” Kael leaned closer, his forehead resting gently against hers. His scent—earthy, wild, and familiar—calmed her racing heart. “Then I’ll fight for you. I’ll fight with you. We’ll face whatever comes together.” Tears welled in Luna’s eyes, not from fear, but from the overwhelming weight of his words. No one had ever fought for her like this. As exhaustion pulled her into sleep, Kael stayed by her side, his hand wrapped protectively around hers. But even as her eyes closed, she could feel it—the mark pulsing like a heartbeat, a dark promise that the shadows were far from done with her. And somewhere deep in the forest, beyond the reach of the pack’s territory, the cloaked figure watched the night sky, a cruel smile on his lips. “The key is marked,” he whispered. “And soon, the Alpha’s curse will be the least of their worries.”
