The words hung in the air like a blade suspended by a fragile thread.
“…who will either save the supernatural world—or destroy it.”
Luna’s heart hammered in her chest, each beat echoing louder than the last. She stared at her trembling hands, the faint glow slowly fading, but the warmth—the power—still thrummed beneath her skin. It felt like a part of her now, woven into her very bones.
Kael moved to her side, his protective instincts battling with something softer, something more vulnerable. His golden eyes searched hers, filled with both wonder and fear. “Luna,” he whispered, his voice rough but gentle, “are you okay?”
She wanted to say yes, but the truth tangled on her tongue. She wasn’t okay. Nothing was okay.
Selene stepped forward, her gaze sharp and unreadable. “The power has awakened,” she murmured. “There’s no going back now.”
Luna’s breath hitched. “What… what power? What prophecy?”
Selene gave a slow, deliberate nod, as if she’d been expecting this question all along. She gestured toward the darkened corner of the room, where an ancient-looking chest rested beneath layers of dust. With a flick of her fingers, the chest creaked open, revealing a weathered scroll bound with crimson thread.
“This,” Selene said, lifting the scroll carefully, “is older than any pack, any coven. It speaks of a child born under the Blood Moon, marked by both light and shadow. A child destined to either unite the supernatural world—or bring it to ruin.”
Luna’s stomach twisted. Born under the Blood Moon… That was the night her parents died.
Kael’s jaw clenched. “You think this prophecy is about her?”
Selene’s dark eyes gleamed. “I know it is.”
Luna shook her head, stepping back. “No. I’m not some—some chosen one. I’m just… me.”
But even as she said it, she knew it wasn’t true. Deep down, she’d always felt different, like there was something missing—a shadow in her past she couldn’t quite reach.
Selene unraveled the scroll, her voice soft but firm as she read:
"Born of blood, light, and flame,
A heart untamed, a cursed name.
The one who walks between the worlds,
Shall rise when fate’s thread unfurls.
Light to save or dark to reign,
A soul of power, bound by pain."
The words sent a chill down Luna’s spine.
Aric, standing guard near the door, finally spoke. “Prophecies are just stories. Legends to scare pups around campfires.”
Selene shot him a sharp look. “This one is real. And it’s unfolding right now.”
Kael’s hand found Luna’s, his grip grounding her as the weight of destiny pressed down. “I don’t care about prophecies,” he growled. “She’s not some weapon. She’s Luna.”
Selene’s gaze softened slightly, but her words remained firm. “She’s more than that. And the Shadow Court knows it. That’s why they’re hunting her.”
Luna’s mind raced. The Shadow Court. The mark. The hunter…
“What do they want with me?” she whispered.
Selene hesitated, then spoke the words Luna dreaded: “To control you. Your power could tip the balance between the supernatural factions. If they claim you, they can rewrite the rules of our world.”
Kael’s growl rumbled low in his chest. “Over my dead body.”
Selene nodded. “That’s exactly what they’re counting on.”
A heavy silence settled over the room, broken only by the faint crackle of the dying candles.
Luna swallowed hard, her mind spinning. She wasn’t just a girl from Ashbourne. She was something else—something dangerous.
But there was one thing she knew for certain.
She wouldn’t let anyone control her.
Straightening her shoulders, she met Selene’s gaze head-on. “I’m not a pawn in their game. If they want me, they’ll have to fight for me.”
Kael’s lips twitched with a hint of pride, his grip on her hand tightening. “And they’ll lose.”
Selene gave a small nod of approval. “Then we’ll need to prepare. The Shadow Court won’t stop. They’ll send more hunters. Stronger ones.”
Aric crossed his arms. “Let them come.”
But Selene’s next words wiped the defiance from their faces.
“They’re not just coming for Luna.” Her eyes darkened. “They’re coming for everyone she loves.”
Luna’s heart clenched. Aunt May…
“We need to go,” Luna said, her voice sharp with urgency. “I need to get to my aunt.”
Kael didn’t argue. He just nodded, already moving. “Then we move at dawn.”
As they prepared for the journey ahead, Luna couldn’t shake the feeling that the world she’d known was slipping away.
But one thing was clear.
This was just the beginning.
