Chapter 3: The Hidden World

The howl echoed through the trees, sending a shiver down Luna’s spine. It wasn’t a sound she was used to hearing in Ashbourne—this was something otherworldly, something far beyond the scope of what she had ever known. Kael didn’t wait for her to process it. His movements were swift, urgent, as he began to walk deeper into the forest, his long strides carrying him farther from the clearing where they’d met. Luna stood frozen for a moment, torn between following him or running in the opposite direction. Everything inside her screamed to flee—to return to the safety of the world she knew. But then she remembered the way Kael had looked at her, the depth of that golden gaze that seemed to pull at her heart. Stay close, he had said. With a breath that felt like it could shatter her, Luna pushed herself to follow. She tried to match his pace, but the distance between them grew as his form melted into the shadows. Her legs trembled beneath her, her body caught in a strange mixture of fear and anticipation. What kind of world was this? And how had she stepped into it? The further they went, the more the air seemed to change. It thickened, heavy with the scent of pine and something else—something darker, earthier. Luna felt her senses sharpening, as if the forest itself was coming alive around her. The silence was overwhelming, broken only by the distant rustle of leaves and the occasional snap of a branch beneath Kael’s boots. She wasn’t sure how much time had passed before they reached a clearing. In the center stood an ancient stone structure—part temple, part fortress, with vines clinging to its weathered walls. The air around it hummed with an eerie energy, as if the very stones had been infused with magic. Kael paused at the entrance, glancing over his shoulder to ensure Luna was still following. When their eyes met, he seemed to hesitate for a fraction of a second, as if unsure whether to let her in. But then, with a sharp exhale, he stepped inside, and Luna had no choice but to follow. The moment she crossed the threshold, a strange sensation washed over her. It was like walking into another world—a world where time didn’t flow the same way, where the air was thick with the weight of forgotten secrets. The inside of the structure was vast, filled with towering stone columns and tapestries that looked as old as the earth itself. Luna’s eyes darted around, taking in the strange symbols etched into the walls, the flickering torches casting long shadows across the floor. And in the center of the room, a massive stone altar stood, its surface covered in markings she couldn’t decipher. “This is the heart of my pack’s domain,” Kael’s voice cut through her thoughts, and Luna looked up to find him watching her closely. His golden eyes were still intense, but there was a wariness to them now. "This is where we keep the secrets of our kind. And now, it’s where you belong.” Luna’s throat went dry. “I don’t understand. I don’t belong here. I’m just—” “You’re not just anything, Luna.” Kael interrupted her, his voice sharper than before. He stepped closer, and Luna took an instinctive step back, though she knew she couldn’t outrun him. He was too fast, too powerful. “You are the key to breaking my curse. And that makes you a target.” “A target?” Luna echoed, her mind spinning. “From who?” “The packs who want your power,” Kael said darkly, his gaze momentarily drifting to the dark corners of the room. “There are those who would kill to possess you. To control you. And you’ll never be safe until we break the curse that binds us.” Luna blinked, the weight of his words settling on her shoulders like a heavy burden. “What are you talking about?” Her voice trembled, but she couldn’t stop herself from asking. “How am I the key? What curse? What are you?” Kael ran a hand through his hair, clearly frustrated, but he didn’t look away. “I’m a cursed Alpha, Luna. My pack was cursed by a witch—one whose magic still lingers in me, poisoning everything I touch. I can never be whole again, not until the curse is broken. And you… you are the only one who can do it.” The room seemed to spin, and Luna had to grip the nearest stone column to steady herself. The key to breaking his curse? “But I’m just a girl,” she whispered, trying to make sense of it all. “I don’t have any powers. I don’t know how to break curses.” “You have powers, Luna,” Kael said softly, his voice tinged with regret. “Powers you don’t even understand yet. Powers that are awakened by the mate bond. You’ll have to learn to control them. Or you’ll destroy everything.” “Why me?” Luna asked, still reeling. “Why not anyone else? Why—” “Because you’re my fated mate,” Kael answered, his voice a low growl. He closed the distance between them, standing just inches from her now. His gaze flickered down to her lips, and for a moment, Luna thought he might kiss her. But then he stepped back, his expression darkening. “And that’s why I have to protect you, even if it means keeping you in the dark.” Luna swallowed hard, trying to absorb everything he had just told her. The mate bond. The curse. His pack. Dark magic. It was all too much, too soon. “Stay with me,” Kael said, his voice softer this time, though the weight of his words still carried a fierce determination. “Until we figure this out. Until we break the curse. I’ll protect you.” Luna felt the pull again—the pull to him, to this world that had nothing to do with the life she had known. A world of power, danger, and forbidden love. She wanted to refuse. She wanted to run, to return to her old life. But deep down, she knew she was already tangled in this web. And there was no going back.
