Tension at the Dock

1311 Words
Andreas sat in the back seat of a military vehicle travelling through the night, his eyes glued to the passing road under the dim light of street lamps. Beside him, Tania adjusted the armour without saying a word, her face hard and full of tension. In front of them, Victor was checking the latest coordinates that General Sinclair had provided through the communicator. Right now, their team had only one goal: prevent Shadow Ares' advanced weapons shipment from leaving the harbour. This mission was the first step to repelling the shadowy organisation, and any wrong decision could be the death of them all. Andreas turned to Tania. It seemed like the tough woman was still upset after arguing with Andreas. Tania glanced at him, then looked away in annoyance. Before long, Andreas and his team had reached their destination. The roar of a large ship's engine filled the night air, mixed with the sound of crashing waves that broke the silence. Andreas and Tania moved in the shadows, clinging to the walls of the old warehouse, watching the activity on the dock below them. Dozens of large crates containing Shadow Ares' cutting-edge weapons were being loaded onto a cargo ship. “The target must be inside that ship,” Andreas whispered with a hand gesture. “Those crates could arm a small army to destroy an entire city. We can't let them get away.” Tania nodded briefly, her eyes sharp and full of concentration. “I'll cut the supply line on the east side. You take over the crane control panel to stop the last lift.” Andreas nodded and started to move. However, his steps were halted when the sound of rapid steps could be heard approaching. A heavily armed shadow team emerged from behind the warehouse, their rifles aimed precisely at their position. “Attack!” The first bullet slammed into the wall beside Andreas, forcing him to roll behind a pile of rickety wooden crates. Tania jumped to the other side, taking cover behind a rusted metal barrel. The sound of gunfire echoed throughout the harbour. “We're trapped!” Andreas shouted over the sound of gunfire. “They've cut off all the exits!” Tania, who was calmly aiming her shots at the two enemies, sighed sharply. “Stay calm, we can get out of here. Trust me⸺” Suddenly, something changed. Amidst the deafening gunfire, Tania turned her body towards Andreas. She raised her gun and pointed it right at the man's head. Andreas was stunned. His eyes widened in disbelief. “Tania?!” Tania stared at him coldly, her anger seemingly burning deeper than the bullets flying around them. Her lips moved slowly, her voice low but threatening. “You already know too much, Andreas. You always know more than you should.” Andreas swallowed, forcing himself to remain calm. “What do you mean, we're on the same team.” Tania tightened her grip on the gun. “Team? You think I'm a fool? If you make a wrong move... I'll finish you off myself.” Before Andreas could reply, a loud explosion shook the docks. Flames soared from the cargo ship, making the entire harbour shake violently. Pieces of metal flew in all directions. The large ship full of weapons crates began to tilt, water rapidly entering the hull. The blast wave hit Andreas and Tania, throwing them backwards. Andreas slammed into a wooden crate, his chest aching as he tried to breathe. Tania staggered, her gun discharging and sliding down the stack of containers. Warning sirens began to sound, warning that the docks would soon collapse. “We have to go now!” Andreas shouted as he ran towards her. Tania, who had now lost her threat, looked up with a conflicted expression on her face. Andreas reached out a hand. “Tania, trust me or we die here together!” Andreas persuaded. Tania stared at Andreas' hand for a moment. Then, with one deep breath, she grabbed his hand, and they ran together into the night, chasing the last chance to live. Andreas and Tania ran across the now violently shaking docks, their shadows disjointed in the night's flickering lights. Deafening sirens blended rhythmically with the roaring flames of the burning ship behind them. The sound of the pursuing gunmen's boots echoed off the wet wooden planks. “Come here! Hurry!” ordered Andreas as he tugged on Tania's arm, turning her towards a towering pile of rusted containers. They jumped behind one of the large crates, panting and hearing the sound of approaching steps. Tania quickly snatched a spare gun from her waist, while Andreas peered between the crates, counting the number of enemies pursuing them. “Three, or maybe four,” Andreas whispered, guessing. “They're also holding automatic weapons.” Tania nodded. Her eyes were full of cold determination. “One little mistake and we won't get out of here alive.” Andreas smiled wryly, though his eyes remained alert. “I told you, trust me.” Before Tania could reply, the sound of gunfire broke out, hitting the metal around them. Bullets ricocheted and created small sparks. They simultaneously moved deeper into cover. “Victor! Kane! Where are you?” Andreas spoke into the communicator attached to his ear. “To your place in a moment,” Victor's voice came through in a calm tone despite the gravity of the situation. “We've cut off their escape route. Don't die before we get there,” he advised. “Thank you for your advice,” Andreas hissed as he pulled the trigger of his gun, peering once more before firing a precise return shot at the pursuers. One man fell, while the others scattered, seeking new cover. A flash of green light from the top of an old crane suddenly split the fog. A large silhouette appeared. Kane, with his sniper-style long-range rifle aimed perfectly. “Target locked,” he muttered in a deadly tone before squeezing the trigger. Two shadowy men fell within seconds, their bodies hitting the ground with a dull sound. The rest, realising they were outnumbered and out of position, began to retreat in disarray. “They're dead,” Kane said with confidence. He was sure he'd hit them square in the chest. “Now!” Andreas shouted, jumping out with Tania. They moved quickly, ambushing the last enemy trying to escape. In no time, the four agents were standing amongst the lifeless bodies, their breathing heavy and sweat pouring down their faces. “All the crates are secured,” Victor said with satisfaction, glancing at the now almost fully submerged cargo ship. “The Shadow Ares lost a major supply tonight,” he added with confidence. Andreas switched on the communication device to report. “General Sinclair, the harbour is clear. Weapons shipments have been stopped.” There was a moment of silence. Then General Sinclair's voice, heavy and full of authority, replied, “Good work. You made great strides tonight. But, this is just the beginning. Hurry back to base!” Kane, who was standing on the edge of the dock with his eyes staring at the turbulent water, suddenly squinted. “Hey guys... there seems to be something over there.” All eyes turned towards it. From beneath the sinking ship, a large shadow appeared, moving slowly but surely to the surface. “Is that...?” Tania raised her gun, her expression turning wary. Andreas narrowed his view, feeling his heartbeat quicken. “It's not part of the ship....” As the shadow broke the surface, a massive drone shaped like a mechanical octopus, complete with gleaming steel tentacles, shot out with terrifying speed. Its red eyes blazed, emitting a light that symbolised death. “Run!” shouted Andreas, just as the drone unleashed a blast of fire at them.
