As soon as they reached the bottom step, the smell of coffee and warm bread reached Beth. Under any other circumstance, the combination would have excited her stomach and perhaps put a smile on her face. She only felt dread; her stomach twisted so tight she doubted she would be able to put anything in it, which was probably for the best because Beth doubted Santiago had called her down to share a meal. Then they reached the dining room, and Beth wasn’t so sure of her assumptions anymore. The table was set for two.
