The room stayed silent and tense as they waited for Ms. Sarah to bring Kaleth. Beth bit the inside of her cheek so hard she tasted blood. She didn’t dare meet Santiago’s gaze, which felt like two laser beams attempting to incinerate her. Finally, she heard the footsteps approach and Kaleth’s tired whimpers. At least the crying had stopped, but the child was still clearly distressed. The whole thing made Beth feel almost sick. She didn’t want Kaleth crying, and the urge to soothe him had been clawing at her. Except she also knew that once the child reacted to her like she suspected he would, Santiago would figure everything out and end her along with the rest of her crew. The door to the study opened.
