They found Avi and Mal three blocks away, at the edge of a car park that smelled like oil and old rain. Mal was leaning against a concrete pillar with her arms crossed, jaw clenched. Avi was no better; she paced in a short, tight line, her fingers curled into fists at her sides. Clearly, whatever had happened had both women on edge. Beth and Belle quickly joined them in the shadows provided by the broken street lights. Unable to help herself, Beth gave their surroundings a cautious once-over, not that she didn’t think the others hadn’t made sure there were no mysterious figures lurking in the dark, ready to catch or harm them, but at this point, it was safe to say that Beth was growing paranoid.
