***Con***
Its been a few long few days as i have been driving no stop wanting to put as much distance between us as i could the farther i got before he realizes im gone is better, Im sure by now he has found us gone, When he left Friday evening I waited about a hour then grabbed the bag and Nix and we left, It was now Monday.
I had purchased a car on Thursday and had it stashed two blocks over from the house in an empty lot.
Im sure he has found it, but I made sure it was completely cleaned out, nothing for him to track me or Nix.
Nix didnt need to be told what was going on once he saw the bag. He grabbed a few things from his room, tossing them in the car,
"It's about time, Mom," He says as I climb in, starting the car. "You deserve better than him."
I glance at him asleep in the passenger seat. You can still see the black eye a little, but it has lightened up, and his cheek looks better. He hadn't talked to his dad since he hit him. Trevor tried, but Nix stayed in his room. I was thankful that Trevor didnt break the door down.
I have managed to make it two states over, spotting a small town on the map called Crystal Springs. Making our way through town, I saw a small diner up ahead, Moe's Diner.
"Hey, Nix, wake up." I shook his shoulder, earning me a groan as he opened his eyes, sitting up from where he was leaning against the window.
"How about some food?"
We have been making it at the gas station, hot hogs and sandwiches. A hot meal sounds good right about now,
"Yeah, I could go for a big fat burger,"
I laugh as I pull into the parking spot, stepping out, we make our way to the front door. I saw the sign Help Wanted hanging in the front window,
Nix pulled the door open. The cool air hit us, and the smell of food wafted through the air.
"Have a seat anywhere." An older lady calls out as she moves behind a bar with a pot of coffee in her hands,
Nix walks in front of me, we make our way to the back booth, once we are seated, we grab the menu, looking it over,
"You know what you want, bud?"
He bobs his head, "Yeah, a burger, with fries, and a chocolate milkshake."
I should have known,
"Welcome to Moe's. Can I start you off with something to drink?" The same older woman asked as she stood at the end of the booth. When she looked up and saw us, I heard her suck in a breath. Im sure she can see the bruises on both of us.
"Hi, can I get a chocolate milkshake, please?" Nix asks,
"Sure can, sweety, and what can I get for you?"
"Oh, um, coffee, please."
"Do you need a minute, or do you know what you would like to order?"
We give her our orders. I just ordered the same as Nix. I couldn't take her stares any longer. I know she wanted to ask, I could see it on her face.
"Are we going to drive more, or are we going to stay here for the night?" Nix asked as he played with the salt shaker,
"I could use a good night's rest, and not sleeping in the car either,"
"Here you go," The woman from before set out plates down along with our drinks, and Nix dove into his burger.
I shook my head as I picked at mine. I was hungry when we pulled in, but the looks I was getting from people who passed by the booth were starting to get to me,
"Dont worry about them, Mom, they dont know us, they dont know what we have been through, only what they see," Nix says as he grabs my hand. I wanted to cry, he was being so strong during this all,
Squeezing his hand, "Let's finish and go find a place to stay for the night,"
We finished our meal. No one brought the check, so I went up to the counter. I saw the same older woman there.
"Excuse me, Im ready to pay, but we didnt get the check yet, we were in the booth back there,: I point.
"Oh, it was taken care of," She waves her hand at me,
I scrunch my brows, "Taken care of?"
"Yeah, you are all good hun,"
"I can pay for our meal," I bit out, but then pulled back when I saw concern wash over her face, "Im sorry," I blurted out.
Her eyes softened as she stepped out from behind the small counter. She reaches out and takes my hand,
"Im not trying to offend you hun, and im not judging you either, I dont know your story but i want to help you I have seen a lot of women like you come through those doors, If i can i help in anyway even if covering their meal no matter how small it was it still a little help." Her voice is soft when she talks; there is no harshness to it.
I felt like a big i***t for snapping at her. Im so guarded with everything that happened, I forgot there are some nice people out there.
"Thank you," I whisper,
"You are very welcome. Can I ask, are you going to stay in town for a while?"
I nod, "I think so, just for a few days, I know my son could use a break from the ca,r and so could I."
"Let me give you an address for a place you can stay it safe and well protected,"
I give her a nod as I snifle her kindness was really hitting me hard, I have been fighting for so long, I forgot what it's like when someone offers to help you. Nix grabs my hand as he rests his head against my arm,
"Thank you. That would be great."
She writes on a small notepad pad then rips it off and hands it to me,
"When you get there, tell them that Monica sent you."
"Thank you again,"
She smiles, then pats Nix on his head,
"You two come back in the morning and get some breakfast. I make some mean pancakes, any flavor you want."
"Really?" Nix is all but bouncing on his toes. That's one of his favorites is pancakes with chocolate chips.
"You bet,"
She gets called away, as we head out, I put the address in the phone i had it says it was only five miles from the diner.
Pulling up to a building, I see the sign out front, HOPE was on it. And then under that word in smaller print was Women's Shelter.
"Mom, what is this place?" Nix asked as we got out, making our way up to the front door, pushing the button a second later, the door opened to women,
"Ah, you must be the ones Monica called about. Come in," She steps back holding the door open,
It was huge inside. It was almost like a hotel but set up in a homey kinda way,
"This way, we will get you all set up in a room, and your son can get his own or stay with you. There are two beds in each room."
"Mom, I want to stay with you," Nix says as he clings to my arm. His worried eyes scan the place,
"It's okay, sweetie, you can stay with mom here, I knwo some boys like their space and we want you to be comfortable here. You guys are safe here,"
She took us to a room she gave me a paper with some information on it. I was worried I would have to fill things out, and I didnt want to be tracked, but she informed me that I didnt, and nothing there is posted online, and no one can gain access to their file, seeing as nothing was on a computer, everything was hard copies and placed in filing cabinets.
"Your safety is our number one priority."
For the first time in a long time, I felt a little bit of relief as we settled down for the night, Nix was out cold curled up in the bed, He was tired and he is trying to be so strong with this all but he is only ten he shouldn't have to carry such worry on his shoulders.
