Suddenly, they heard a knock on the door. The sharp knock reverberated through the dimly lit room, casting an unsettling silence over the air. Tension hung between them like a thick fog, their eyes locking in shared anxiety, hearts pounding with unspoken fears. The once comforting walls, lined with memories of laughter and joy, now loomed like a cage, trapping them in their dread. “Are you expecting anyone?” she whispered, her voice tinged with a quaver that betrayed her apprehension. “No, not at all,” he replied, narrowing his eyes at the door, an unsettling flutter of urgency quickening his breath as he assessed the threat lurking beyond. “Then who could it be?” she asked, worry knitting her brow as she twisted a nervous strand of hair around her finger. “Just take a deep breath. I’ll check it out,” he reassured her, striving to project calm, though a knot of anxiety tightened in his stomach. “What if it’s Mateo?” Panic surged through her voice as her color drained, the weight of that possibility crashing over them like a tidal wave. “There’s no way. That’s him by the door,” he affirmed, his tone laced with steely confidence. Without hesitation, she swung her legs off the bed, urgency igniting her movements. She slipped into her jeans and a faded t-shirt, her heart racing in sync with the relentless knocking echoing in the silence. Stepping forward, he approached the door with a calculated stride, the sound of his heartbeat drumming loudly in his ears. He glanced through the peephole, and recognition jolted through him like a shock; it was Mateo, the very man Lyra had feared could find them. Panic surged as he pivoted, dashing back into the room, urgency igniting within him. “He’s here!” he blurted, pacing the cramped space as thoughts spiraled wildly, searching for a semblance of a plan. Her eyes widened in sheer terror, a flicker of desperation mingled with determination etching itself into her features. “What do I do?” she implored, darting her gaze around the room as if hoping for an escape route to materialize. “You need to leave—now!” he insisted, urgency sharpening his voice. She shot him a defiant glare, frustration mingling with her fear. “How do you expect me just to vanish?” He rushed to the closet, shoving aside his clothes in a frantic bid to create a hiding space, the relentless knock still echoing ominously around them. “Get in already!” he urged, gesturing towards the dark recess of the closet with an urgent whisper. “What do you mean? I can’t fit in there!” she protested, hands on her hips, frustration and fear battling for dominance on her face. They stared at each other, confusion swirling between them like an impending storm. But then, her expression shifted, illumination sparking in her eyes. “I have an idea!” she declared, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper as she leaned closer, eagerly sharing her plan. He listened intently, a mix of hope and apprehension battling within him. With a deep breath, he left the room, the weight of their uncertainty lingering in the air behind him. He opened the door, letting Mateo step inside. “Why did you keep me out for so long?” Mateo demanded, his gaze boring into Miguel as if he had caught him in a lie. Miguel forced a smile, though his heart raced. “I was asleep—I didn’t hear you knocking. Please, come in,” he stammered, his nerves threading through every word. “I figured I’d find you at the office. I checked, but all I found was empty space,” Mateo retorted, eyeing him with a mix of suspicion and familiarity. “Yeah, I had… a thing to take care of,” Miguel stuttered, scratching his head, his mind racing. “Are you okay?” Mateo shot him a piercing look, the weight of concern evident in his expression. “Of course! Just fine,” Miguel deflected, wiping the telltale sweat beading on his forehead. Mateo’s gaze roamed around the living room, landing on a woman’s watch glinting on the table. As he reached for it, Miguel reacted instinctively, snatching the watch away. “Got a visitor?” Mateo quipped, a playful smirk on his face. “Not really,” Miguel replied too quickly, swiping at his forehead again, desperate to maintain his cool. “Relax, bro. I’m no snitch,” Mateo reassured him, laughter in his eyes. “I have something to show you in the guest room,” Miguel suggested, desperation threading his tone as he led the way. “Alright, let’s go,” Mateo replied, rising to his feet and following closely behind. Meanwhile, Lyra heard the door to the guest room click shut. Without a moment to spare, she rushed out, juggling her bag and shoe as she tiptoed though careful not to make a sound. Her heart pounded as she hurried downstairs, and before she knew it, she was outside, escaping into the bright air, adrenaline coursing through her veins. In the guest room, Mateo surveyed the surroundings, a shadow of suspicion lingering in his eyes before he turned back to Miguel, who stood anxiously at the door, praying for a miracle. “What did you want to show me?” Mateo asked, his gaze penetrating. “Ohh, I forgot. I thought I'd bought them,” Miguel fumbled, searching for a distraction to buy more time as the echo of impending doom hovered between them. “Are you sure you are okay? You have been acting weird ever since I got here” Mateo touched him on his forehead. “You should see a doctor,” he said as he walked out of the room. Miguel followed him behind. Immediately, his eyes dropped to his room entrance, which was slightly ajar. He hissed a sigh of relief knowing that Lyra had left. “The reason I came here is to discuss the recent proposal with you. Remember Johnson’s proposal I told you about,” Mateo said “Of course, I remember. What about it?” “I went through the pros and the cons of the proposal and I know for a fact the proposal will be beneficial to us” “What do you think?” Mateo asked. “Of course, if you say so,” Miguel said. “I will take my leave now,” Mateo said as he headed towards the entrance. Mateo turned back, facing Miguel. “It seems your guest forgot to close the door properly,” he grinned while stepping out.
