Chapter 4

759 Words
Two days later, Adrian suddenly showed up at my office to pick me up. I had no idea what had gotten into him, but he insisted on taking me to a high-profile charity gala that evening. In all the years we had been married, this was the first time he was willing to bring me to a formal event. The evening went smoothly, and Adrian was clearly in a good mood. Until Selena, who looked as innocent and fragile as a little white rabbit, suddenly appeared and bumped into someone. The wine spilled all over him, instantly darkening his expression. My face turned pale the moment I recognized him. It was the same man who had sexually harassed me during a business negotiation years ago. "Do you not watch where you're going?" He snapped at her harshly. Selena's eyes immediately turned red. She looked at Adrian helplessly, biting her lower lip as if she had been wronged beyond words. Adrian frowned and instinctively stepped in front of her, shielding her. "She's still young. She hasn't seen much of the world. Mr. Caldwell, don't hold it against her." His dry excuse only made Mr. Caldwell's expression turn uglier. His eyes roamed over Selena with obvious interest before he pointed at Selena hiding behind Adrian and sneered. "Fine. Have her wipe my clothes clean and drink a few glasses to apologize. Then I'll let this go." Selena gripped Adrian's sleeve tightly. Tears welled in her eyes, but she still refused to say a word. Adrian gently patted her hand in reassurance. Then, unexpectedly, his gaze shifted toward me. "Babe, you apologize to Mr. Caldwell on Selena's behalf." My entire body trembled. I immediately refused. "Why should I?" Adrian frowned, looking at me as if I was the one being unreasonable. "Selena is still young. She hasn't been through things like this. But you're different. You're used to it." The entire room fell silent. Everyone's eyes turned toward me, filled with undisguised mockery and judgment. Then someone finally broke the silence, nudging Adrian with a suggestive smile. "Who would've thought? You're so young, yet your wife is already so experienced. Mr. Whitmore, you really are lucky." "Exactly. Looks like Mr. Whitmore knows how to train a woman. We should all learn from you." The filthy, vulgar comments drained the color from my face. Adrian's expression darkened. He was about to speak when Selena suddenly looked frightened, her body going limp as she collapsed. Adrian panicked instantly. He picked her up in his arms and rushed out without hesitation. Leaving me alone to face those increasingly shameless gazes. In the end, someone finally couldn't stand watching anymore and stepped forward to protect me as she led me away. Before leaving, she draped her coat over my shoulders and looked at me meaningfully. "You're still young. When a marriage has already rotted, you should leave before it destroys you completely." One sentence shattered the last bit of pride I had used to deceive myself. When I returned home, I stood in front of the closet for a long time. Inside were countless things, almost all of them gifts from Adrian. I took them out one by one and laid them across the bed. The first was the anniversary gift Adrian had given me for our first year of marriage. The second was another anniversary present he had bought me years later. The black stilettos with red soles were the birthday gift he had given me when I turned twenty—the pair of heels he had personally slipped onto my feet. Every single item had been carefully chosen to satisfy his desires. They had dressed me up as a delicate, obedient doll meant only to please him. Only now did I finally understand. This was never love. It was possession. My phone lit up with messages from Adrian. Adrian: Babe, it's all settled. I'm coming back to pick you up. I bought you a new ring. I'll give it to you when I get back. About tonight... I'm sorry." A call suddenly came through. It was my boss. "The plan has changed. We're leaving earlier than expected. The car to pick you up is already downstairs. Pack your things and come down as soon as possible." "Okay." I wiped away my tears, picked up my luggage, and walked out of the place that had trapped me for years. Before boarding the plane, I sent Adrian one final message. Evelyn: Adrian, let's get divorced. The next second, the silent chat window suddenly began vibrating nonstop.
