Chapter 2: Moonlit Bond

Do you trust me, Arwen?” His voice was low, rough, laced with something that made my pulse tremble. I should have said yes. It was such a simple question. A Luna should always trust her Alpha. But as Kael’s golden eyes burned into mine beneath the glow of the full moon, the truth tangled in my throat like smoke. “Yes,” I whispered — and hated how unsure I sounded. He stepped closer. The forest air shifted with his scent — pine, storm, and something darker, something that always made me forget how to breathe. His hand brushed my jaw, tilting my face toward his. The bond between us pulsed — faint, electric, alive. I could feel his wolf pressing against the edges of my mind, testing, reaching for mine. The fated bond was strengthening. And I was terrified. “Your heartbeat,” Kael murmured, his thumb tracing my lower lip. “It spikes every time I touch you. Is it fear… or something else?” I forced a laugh, though my body betrayed me. “Maybe both.” He smiled — that rare, almost tender smile that made him look less like an Alpha and more like the boy I once saw beneath the crown. “I’d rather it be the second.” His words melted into the silence that followed. The night was soft around us — moonlight spilling through the trees like silver fire, the distant sound of wolves howling in harmony. It should have been perfect. It should have felt right. But somewhere deep within me, the magic — my magic — stirred. Kael leaned in, his lips brushing the edge of my ear. “The bond calls to you, doesn’t it?” I closed my eyes. Yes. I could feel it pulling me closer to him, a gravitational force that no power on earth could fight. His emotions hummed through the bond — heat, hunger, something deeper that both thrilled and frightened me. “I feel it,” I confessed softly. “But it feels… wrong somehow.” He drew back slightly, confusion flickering in his eyes. “Wrong?” I hesitated. “Not the bond — just… me.” He frowned. “Arwen, I know something’s been bothering you since the coronation. You’ve been quiet, distant. I can sense your unrest.” His voice lowered, gentle but firm. “Talk to me.” The bond shimmered again, stronger this time. My wolf — or what little of her existed — shivered under his dominance. I could feel him trying to connect, to merge our souls like all true mates do. But my magic — the witch’s blood in me — resisted. It clawed against the bond like a caged beast. I stepped back before he could feel the burn of my pulse against his. “It’s nothing,” I lied, clutching my hands behind me. “Just… the weight of everything. The ceremony, the expectations.” He studied me for a long moment, then exhaled, tension leaving his shoulders. “You carry the whole pack’s eyes now. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed.” His expression softened. “But you’re not alone, Arwen. You have me. Always.” Always. The word echoed in me like a promise I didn’t deserve. I wanted to believe it — gods, I wanted to — but if he ever learned the truth of what I was, “always” would turn to ash. Kael reached for me again, his hand finding mine. “Let’s walk,” he said, tugging gently. “There’s something I want to show you.” We moved through the forest path, the moon guiding our steps. The air grew colder, sharper, alive with the scent of night-blooming flowers. He stopped at a clearing — the heart of the territory — where a massive stone arch stood, carved with ancient runes that glowed faintly under the moonlight. “This place,” he said, his voice low, “was where the first Alpha and Luna sealed their bond. Their wolves merged here, under the Coronation Moon.” I swallowed. “It’s beautiful.” He smiled faintly. “Our ancestors believed that when a Luna truly opened her soul to her Alpha, the moon would answer. That’s how the bond becomes unbreakable.” My breath hitched. “Unbreakable?” He nodded, gaze steady on mine. “Once we complete it, no force — witchcraft, curse, or death — can part us.” The word witchcraft sliced through me like ice. My fingers trembled in his. “Kael—” I started, but he silenced me with a touch, his thumb pressing against the mark on my neck — the place where his bite would go when the bond was sealed. “I don’t want to rush you,” he murmured. “But every night, the pull gets stronger. Can you feel it?” I could. It was unbearable — the thrum of his heartbeat in my chest, the ache beneath my skin whenever we were apart. The magic inside me wanted to twist it, to corrupt it, to claim him in ways the moon never intended. If I gave in, I might destroy him. “I feel it,” I said, forcing the words past my trembling lips. “But I need more time.” Kael’s expression tightened, but he nodded slowly. “Then I’ll wait,” he said, though his wolf howled in silent protest. “For as long as it takes.” The sincerity in his tone nearly broke me. I leaned forward, resting my forehead against his chest, letting his warmth steady me. For a moment, everything stilled — no secrets, no fear, just us and the quiet song of the moon. Then — a flash. Pain shot through me like lightning. My magic flared, wild and uncontrollable. I gasped, clutching my chest as faint blue light flickered beneath my skin. “Arwen?” Kael’s voice was sharp now, alert. “What’s happening?” I stumbled back, shaking my head. “I— I don’t know—” But I did. The runes on the arch had begun to glow, resonating with my energy. Ancient symbols pulsed in rhythm with my heartbeat, reacting to something buried deep within me. Kael grabbed my shoulders, eyes wide. “This shouldn’t be happening. The arch only responds to pure wolf blood.” My secret teetered on the edge of revelation. The ground trembled beneath us. The light grew brighter, wrapping around me like fire. Kael’s grip tightened. His wolf growled, protective, ready to fight whatever force dared touch me. “Arwen, talk to me! What are you—” “Stop!” I cried out, the word bursting with power. The magic surged through me — uncontrollable, raw — and with it, a gust of wind blasted outward, throwing Kael several feet back. He landed hard, his eyes burning gold with shock and disbelief. The air crackled between us, thick with the scent of magic. And then… silence. Kael slowly rose to his feet, gaze locked on me. His voice came out rough, uncertain. “Arwen… what are you?” The words struck like a dagger. My lips parted, but nothing came out. My heart pounded against my ribs, the secret I’d buried for so long trembling at the edge of exposure. He took a single step toward me — not as an Alpha, not as a lover, but as a predator sensing danger. And under the cold silver light of the moon, I realized — the bond between us had just changed forever. Kael’s growing suspicion after witnessing Arwen’s uncontrolled burst of magic sets the stage for mistrust, danger, and the painful unraveling of their fated bond.
