Valentina kept her arms wrapped around her father, but her voice stayed sharp as she glanced back at Elisa.
“Well, I asked her to do something for me and she couldn’t just do it right now,” she said. “Dad, I’m her sister. Don’t I have the right to discipline her?”
Giorgio looked down at Elisa, still kneeling on the floor with her cheek red from the slap. A faint, cold smile touched his lips.
“Aight, that is fine,” he said calmly. “If she did something wrong, it’s okay to discipline her. She needs to learn her place.”
The words were spoken with the same indifferent tone he might use to discuss the weather. There was no warmth, no real concern only the quiet disdain of a man who had long ago decided what Elisa was worth.
Elisa kept her head lowered. She had heard words like these a thousand times before. Ever since her teenage years she had been nothing more than a servant in this house a convenient slave wearing the label of “daughter.” The fake care, the sudden scolding, the casual cruelty none of it was new. She wiped her eyes quickly, stood up without a word, and walked silently toward the servants’ staircase that led to her small room at the back of the mansion.
Giorgio watched her go for a second, then patted Valentina’s back.
“Come, let’s have dinner,” he said. “Tell me more about your day.”
Valentina smiled sweetly and followed him, the earlier tension already forgotten.
The next morning
The barbecue shop was still quiet in the early hours. The sun had barely risen, and the street outside was empty except for a few delivery trucks. Elena and Lucia had arrived early to help with prep work. Elena was wiping down the tables while Lucia arranged fresh spices on the counter. The smell of charcoal and marinade already filled the air.
Gino stood in the corner near the back office, scrolling through his phone while he supervised. Even though he was the boss, he liked to be hands-on every morning.
Suddenly his phone buzzed with a breaking-news alert. He tapped it open and froze.
A bold headline filled the screen in large red letters:
SHOCKING REVELATION: THE “DEAD” MORETTI TWINS ARE ALIVE SEEN WORKING IN LOCAL BARBECUE SHOP
The news anchor’s voice played from Gino’s phone as the report began:
“Good morning. In a story that has stunned the nation, new evidence has emerged proving that the twin daughters of the powerful Moretti family believed to have died at birth eighteen years ago are in fact alive and have been living in a modest orphanage in the city.
“Sources confirm that on April 10, 2008, at Mercy General Hospital, two sets of twins were born to the Moretti brothers, Giorgio and Vittorio.
Hospital records, now leaked, reveal that a switch took place and an execution order was issued by an unknown party. The plan was to eliminate both Elena and Lucia one from each set of twins to secure control of the entire Moretti empire.
“But the nurse in charge could not bring herself to carry out the killings. Instead, she fled with the two infants and hid them in St. Lucia Orphanage. Even though Giorgio Moretti later found out about the switch, he publicly announced that his own twins had died at birth instead of revealing the truth. He has been raising the surviving twin, Elisa, as his own.
“Yesterday, an unknown source leaked photos of the two missing heiresses Elena Moretti and Lucia working together at Gino’s Barbecue Shop, a small local eatery. The girls, now eighteen, appear to have been living ordinary lives completely unaware of their true identities.
“Giorgio Moretti has not yet issued a statement, but the news has already sent shockwaves through the business world. The Moretti empire, worth billions, may now face a historic inheritance battle.
“More on this developing story after the break.”
Gino’s eyes widened. He stared at the screen, then slowly turned toward the front of the shop where Elena and Lucia were laughing about something as they worked.
“Elena… Lucia…” he muttered under his breath.
He looked back at the phone. Clear photos of both girls one of them taken just yesterday during the argument with the lady from yesterday filled the screen.
Gino rubbed his face, stunned.
“Holy hell,” he whispered. “What kind of mess just walked into my shop?”
He glanced at the two girls again, still chatting happily, completely unaware that their faces were now on every major news channel in the country.
Gino took a deep breath and called out, trying to keep his voice steady.
“Elena! Lucia! Come here for a second. There’s something you both need to see… right now.”
