chapter 3
Lizzy couldn't stop thinking about the mysterious man she had encountered the night before. who was he, and what was he doing in ravenswood? she knew she had to find out more.
the next day, lizzy was shelving books in the library when she saw a young woman browsing the shelves. she was about lizzy's age, with curly brown hair and a friendly smile.
"hi, can i help you find something?" lizzy asked, approaching her.
the woman turned to her, her smile widening. "oh, hi! i'm mia. i'm new to town and i was just checking out the library."
"lizzy," she replied, shaking her hand. "i'm the librarian here. nice to meet you."
mia's eyes widened. "wow, a librarian. that's so cool. i've always loved books."
they chatted for a while, bonding over their shared love of literature. lizzy was grateful for the distraction, as it took her mind off the mysterious man from the night before.
as they were about to part ways, mia turned to lizzy. "hey, do you want to grab a coffee sometime? there's a cute little café down the street."
lizzy hesitated. she had never been one for making new friends, but there was something about mia that made her feel at ease.
"sure, that sounds great," she said, smiling.
they exchanged phone numbers and arranged to meet at the café the next day.
as lizzy walked home, she couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement. maybe making a new friend was exactly what she needed to lift her spirits.
that night, lizzy went to bed early, exhausted from the long day at work. she was just about to drift off when she heard a loud crash outside. she jumped out of bed, her heart racing.
as she peered out the window, she saw a figure running through the streets. it was the same man from the night before.
lizzy knew she had to follow him. she quickly got dressed and grabbed a flashlight before heading out into the night.
as she ran through the streets, she could hear the sound of footsteps getting closer. she turned a corner and saw the man standing in front of her, his eyes glowing in the darkness.
"what do you want?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady.
the man just smiled at her. "you're quite brave, following me like this. what do you hope to achieve?"
lizzy took a step back, feeling a sense of fear wash over her. but then she remembered something victor had said to her: be careful, lizzy. there are dangerous things out there, especially at night.
with newfound courage, lizzy stood her ground. "i want to know who you are, and why you're in ravenswood."
the man's smile faded, and he stepped forward. "i am called nikolai. and i am here for a very specific reason."
lizzy felt a sense of unease at the mention of his name. there was something about nikolai that made her skin crawl.
before she could say anything, she heard a sound behind her. she turned around and saw victor standing there, his eyes fixed on nikolai.
"what are you doing here, nikolai?" victor asked, his voice cold.
nikolai just shrugged. "i was just passing through. don't worry about me, old man."
victor took a step forward, his fists clenched. "i suggest you leave town. now."
nikolai didn't say anything. he just turned and disappeared into the shadows.
lizzy looked at victor, unsure of what to say. she had so many questions, but she didn't know how to ask them.
"who was that?" she finally managed to say.
victor sighed, his eyes never leaving the spot where nikolai had disappeared. "he's trouble. he's a vampire, like me. but he's not like me. he's dangerous."
lizzy felt a chill run down her spine at the mention of nikolai being a vampire. she had never believed in creatures like that before, but after meeting victor, she knew that they were real.
"what do we do?" she asked, looking up at victor.
victor shook his head. "there's nothing we can do. nikolai is a lone wolf. he doesn't belong to any clan, so he doesn't follow any rules. all we can do is be careful."
lizzy nodded, feeling a sense of unease settle over her. she had a feeling that nikolai wasn't going to be the last dangerous creature she encountered in ravenswood.
the next day, lizzy met up with mia at the café. they talked about their favorite books and movies, and lizzy felt herself relaxing in her new friend's company.
as they were leaving, lizzy saw something that made her blood run cold. across the street, she saw nikolai, watching her.
"mia, we have to go," she whispered, grabbing her friend's arm.
mia looked at her, confused. "what's wrong?"
lizzy didn't answer. she just pulled mia towards her house, hoping to lose nikolai in the process.
as they turned a corner, lizzy saw that nikolai was still following them. she quickened her pace, her heart pounding in her chest.
they finally made it to lizzy's house, and she quickly locked the door behind them. she turned to mia, who looked terrified.
"what's going on?" mia asked, her voice shaking.
lizzy took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down. "there's someone following us. a man named nikolai. he's dangerous."
mia looked at her, her eyes wide with fear. "what are we going to do?"
lizzy didn't have an answer, all she knew was that they had to be careful. she couldn't let anything happen to her new friend.
As the night wore on, lizzy couldn't shake the feeling of unease that had settled over her. she knew that nikolai was still out there, watching them.
suddenly, she heard a knock at the door. she froze, her heart pounding in her chest.
"who is it?" she called out, her voice barely above a whisper.
"it's me, victor," her heart pounding in her chest. She had never seen him like this before - his eyes were dark, his muscles tense with anger.
"Are you okay?" he asked, turning to her.
Lizzy nodded, still in shock from the encounter. "Who was that? Do you know him?"
Victor hesitated before answering. "Nikolai is a vampire, like me. But he's not like me. He's dangerous, Lizzy. You need to stay away from him."
Lizzy felt a shiver run down her spine at the mention of the word 'vampire'. It was all so surreal - she had never believed in things like vampires before, but now she was standing face to face with two of them.
"Come on," Victor said, taking her hand. "Let's get you home."
They walked in silence, the only sound the crunching of leaves under their feet. Lizzy wanted to ask Victor more questions, to understand more about this world of vampires and danger. But she could tell he was in no mood to talk.
When they reached her house, Victor turned to her. "Be careful, Lizzy. I don't want anything to happen to you."
Lizzy smiled, feeling a warmth spread through her chest at his words. "I will. Thank you for protecting me."
As she watched him walk away, Lizzy felt a sense of loss. She didn't know why, but there was something about Victor that drew her to him. She couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to him than met the eye.
The next day, Lizzy met Mia at the café, still reeling from the encounter with Nikolai. She was grateful for the distraction, for the chance to forget about the darkness lurking in the shadows.
As they sat and sipped their coffee, Lizzy couldn't help but notice how comfortable she felt with Mia. It was as if they had known each other for years, not just a day.
"So, what do you like to do for fun?" Mia asked, breaking the silence.
Lizzy shrugged. "I don't know. I guess I like to read and write. I'm kind of boring, I guess."
Mia laughed. "No way. You seem really interesting to me. Hey, have you ever been to that old abandoned house on the edge of town?"
Lizzy shook her head. "No, I haven't. Why?"
Mia's eyes twinkled with excitement. "It's supposed to be haunted. I was thinking we could go check it out tonight."
Lizzy felt a sense of apprehension at the thought of going to an abandoned house at night. But there was something about the way Mia talked about it, with such a sense of adventure and excitement, that made her feel like she couldn't say no.
"Okay," she said, smiling. "Let's do it."
As night fell, Lizzy and Mia set out towards the abandoned house, their flashlights illuminating the path ahead. Lizzy couldn't shake the feeling of unease that settled in the pit of her stomach, but she was determined not to let it show.
As they approached the house, they could hear the creaking of floorboards and the whispering of voices. Lizzy's heart was pounding in her chest, but she refused to back down.
They entered the house, the darkness swallowing them whole. Lizzy could barely see her hand in front of her face, but she could hear the sound of Mia's footsteps ahead of her.
Suddenly, there was a loud crash from upstairs, followed by a blood-curdling scream.
Lizzy froze, her heart in her throat. "Mia?" she called out, her voice trembling.
There was no response. Lizzy took a deep breath and slowly made her way up the creaky stairs, her flashlight shaking in her hand.
As she reached the top of the stairs, she saw Mia lying on the ground, her face contorted in pain. Lizzy rushed over to her, her heart pounding in her chest.
"Mia, what happened? Are you okay?" Lizzy asked, her voice shaking.
Mia groaned in response, clutching her ankle. "I...I think I twisted it. I can't move it."
Lizzy helped Mia to her feet, wrapping her arm around her friend's waist for support. She could feel Mia's weight on her as they slowly made their way back down the stairs.
As they emerged from the house, Lizzy could see a figure standing in the shadows. It was Nikolai, the vampire who had attacked them the night before.
"Stay back," Lizzy said, her voice trembling.
Nikolai smirked, his eyes gleaming in the darkness. "You think you can tell me what to do, little girl? I could snap your neck in an instant."
Lizzy felt a sense of fear wash over her as Nikolai stepped closer. But then, she remembered something Victor had said to her the night before.
She frantically searched her pockets, hoping to find something that would give her an advantage over Nikolai. Her fingers closed around the cold metal of the amulet she had just bought at the antique store in Ravenswood. Suddenly, she felt a strange energy coursing through her veins, and she knew what she had to do.
With a newfound confidence, Lizzy pulled out the amulet and held it up high, channeling its power. Nikolai hissed and recoiled, clearly affected by the amulet's magic. Lizzy seized the opportunity and dashed towards the door, but Nikolai was fast on her heels.
Lizzy quickly grabbed Mia's hand and they sprinted through the dark and desolate streets, her heart pounding in her chest. The church loomed in the distance, its towering cross a beacon of hope. Mia gritted her teeth and pushed herself harder, ignoring the pain in her legs.
As she neared the church, Lizzy saw the large cross that stood outside the entrance. Remembering the trick Victor had taught her about vampires, she ran towards it and grabbed it with both hands. The moment her fingers touched the cold metal, she felt a surge of power, and she knew that Nikolai would not be able to touch her.
Nikolai hissed and snarled, his eyes glowing with rage. Lizzy stood her ground, holding the cross firmly in front of her. With a final snarl, Nikolai turned and fled into the darkness, leaving Lizzy gasping for breath but triumphant.
"Let's get out of here," she said to Mia, taking her friend's hand and pulling her away from the scene.
As they made their way back to town, Lizzy could feel the adrenaline pumping through her veins. She had never felt so alive.
When they reached Mia's house, Lizzy helped her friend inside and sat her down on the couch. She could see the pain etched on Mia's face and knew that she needed medical attention.
"I'm going to call an ambulance," Lizzy said, pulling out her phone.
Mia shook her head. "No, it's okay. I'll be fine. You should go home and get some rest."
Lizzy hesitated, not wanting to leave her friend alone. But she knew Mia was right. She needed to rest and process everything that had happened.
As she walked home, Lizzy couldn't shake the feeling that something had changed in her. She had always been the quiet, reserved one, content to blend into the background. But now, she felt like a different person entirely.
She had powers within and she couldn't even begin to understand. And she was determined to use those powers to protect the people she cared about.
As she crawled into bed, Lizzy felt a sense of peace wash over her. For the first time in a long time, she felt like she was exactly where she was meant to be.
