Kael murmured, "Tell me, Lola," in a quiet voice with a hint of something I couldn't identify. "Remember the evening your mother vanished?" The inquiry made me tense, and his abrupt change in tone made my skin crawl. As though the night itself had taken on a more sinister tone, the moonlight that was shining through the trees appeared to grow dimmer. Although I had always anticipated this question, I had hoped it would remain in the past. The memories came flooding back, painful and unwanted, and my hands clinched into fists, the nails digging into my palms. "What makes you curious?" With my voice hardly audible above a whisper, I posed the question, which hung between us like a threatening fog.
