Jack returned to the camp with two black soldiers just as Spencer and Simeon were returning with their men. They had searched unsuccessfully for over an hour, each group assuming the success of the other. The men then sat around the campfire to wait for Leonard and the others. When he returned with Derbyshire and a group of whites and blacks he, too, reported failure. Simeon suggested that they should contact the villagers to help, because the villagers knew the terrain better. Jack opposed the idea, saying the villagers might in fact be the culprits. After a while of silence, Leonard said, “Simeon has a point; the locals know the topography better than we do.
