Arochukwu warriors sprawled around several campfires in an open field. It was nightfall and the men were tired after several days of “establishing their influence.” Some of the men were busy roasting game they had hunted, while most of the others had retired to their sleeping mats. Nnaemeka rose from his mat and went over to Ebube who was standing in deep thought, his back to the camp and his hands folded across his chest. “We left Arochukwu with forty-three of our finest warriors,” Nnaemeka said. He paused, knowing he was starting a conversation that would be unpopular with his friend. “We now have less than half that number and most of them are in bad shape.” Ebube made no attempt to turn. Nnaemeka did not know if he was listening or not, but he had a message to pass. “Nwane!” he said
