Chapter 3: The Summoning

1474 Words
The morning sun did nothing to warm the towering, seventy-story monolith that was the Vance Corporate Headquarters. Piercing the skyline like a jagged shard of dark glass and chrome, the building cast a massive shadow over the bustling city streets below. At exactly 8:47 AM, Elena Ross stood across the avenue, staring up at the architectural giant. Her neck ached from the angle. She felt entirely out of place, an anomaly in a world constructed for the ultra-wealthy. Her faded, slightly oversized denim jacket was damp from the lingering morning mist, and her canvas sneakers were visibly worn at the soles. Around her, a sea of high-society executives, dressed in sharp, tailored office wear and holding luxury leather briefcases, swept past without giving her a second glance. She looked down at the matte-black business card still clutched in her hand, its platinum lettering catching the morning light. *Alexander Vance.* Elena hadn't slept a single wink. After leaving the hospital bed where Leo lay hooked to an array of monitors, she had spent the remaining hours of the night pacing her tiny, rundown apartment, her mind spiraling in absolute panic. The hospital's noon deadline was a ticking time bomb inside her head. Twenty-five thousand dollars by midday, or Leo's treatment would be permanently disconnected. She had no other options, no miracle family member to call, and no savings left to bleed. This cold, mysterious billionaire was her absolute last resort. Taking a deep, trembling breath, she gripped the strap of her canvas backpack and crossed the street, stepping through the revolving glass doors into the main lobby. The interior was intimidatingly grand. Floors of polished white marble stretched out as far as the eye could see, reflecting the massive, minimalist abstract sculptures scattered across the space. A security desk manned by three stone-faced guards sat at the center. Elena swallowed hard and approached the desk. "Excuse me. I am here to see Mr. Alexander Vance. He... he told me to come at nine o'clock." The guard looked up, his gaze sweeping over her faded clothes with a subtle, critical raise of his eyebrow. "Name?" "Elena. Elena Ross." The guard tapped a few keys on a sleek computer monitor. Instantly, his rigid posture shifted. His eyes widened slightly, and his tone became noticeably polite. "Ah, yes, Miss Ross. Mr. Vance is expecting you. Take the VIP elevator on the far right. It will take you directly to the penthouse suite." "Thank you," she murmured, her heart beginning to hammer against her ribs. The VIP elevator was a private pod of brushed steel and mirrored glass. When she pressed the button for the top floor, the ascent was so swift and smooth that she only felt a slight pressure in her ears. As the floor numbers flashed rapidly on the digital display, Elena stared at her reflection. She looked exhausted, her pale skin contrasting sharply with the dark circles under her eyes. She felt like a lamb walking willingly into a lion's den. With a soft, melodic chime, the elevator doors slid open, revealing the penthouse executive suite. The space was breathtaking, designed with dramatic chiaroscuro lighting that emphasized the sheer luxury of the empire. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a panoramic view of the entire city, making the buildings below look like tiny toys. The decor was fiercely minimalist—dark obsidian desks, plush leather seating, and a heavy, quiet atmosphere that exuded immense wealth and power. "Miss Ross, right this way," a professional woman in a crisp black blazer said, rising from an assistant's desk. She led Elena toward a massive set of double mahogany doors, knocking once before opening them. "Mr. Vance, your nine o'clock appointment has arrived." Elena stepped into the office, and the air immediately grew heavy. Alexander Vance was standing by the massive window, his back to her. He had discarded his suit jacket from the night before, now wearing a custom-fitted charcoal waistcoat over a pristine white dress shirt, the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing lean, defined muscles. He held a crystal tumbler of amber liquid in his hand, swirling it slowly. As the doors closed behind Elena, he turned around. The impact of his piercing, icy gray eyes was instantaneous. His sharp, sculpted jawline was set in a firm, unreadable expression, his dark hair flawlessly styled. He didn't speak immediately; instead, he let his gaze slowly roam over her, taking in her defensive posture and the fierce desperation hidden behind her wide eyes. "You're on time, Miss Ross," Alexander said, his rich baritone voice cutting through the silence of the room. He walked over to his massive executive desk, setting the crystal glass down with a soft click. "Sit." Elena didn't move toward the plush leather chairs opposite him. She stayed rooted to the spot, her hands gripping her backpack straps tightly. "I don't want to sit, Mr. Vance. I don't have time for corporate pleasantries. The hospital is going to cut off my brother's life-saving treatment in less than three hours if I don't give them twenty-five thousand dollars. You said last night you had a proposition that could solve all my problems. What is it?" Alexander looked at her, entirely unfazed by her sudden outburst. In fact, a small, dangerous spark of amusement flickered deep within his cold eyes. He liked her fire; it would make the play much more convincing to his traditionalist board members. "Direct. I appreciate that quality in a business partner," Alexander murmured. He picked up a sleek, leather-bound document from his desk and walked around the perimeter until he was standing just a few feet away from her. The scent of his expensive cedarwood and dark amber cologne drifted into her senses, making her breath catch. He held the document out to her. "The solution to all your problems is right here, Elena. This is a legally binding contract for a fake engagement. You will play the role of my devoted, doting fiancée for exactly one year." Elena’s jaw dropped. Of all the things she had anticipated—hidden fees, extortion, manual labor—this was entirely outside her reality. "A... a fake fiancée? Why on earth would a man like you need a fake fiancée?" "Because a man like me is currently facing a traditionalist board of directors who believe a CEO should be a stable, family-oriented man before they hand over absolute control of the global empire," Alexander explained, his voice turning deadly cold, a dark undercurrent filling his words. "My cousin, Marcus, is using my bachelor status to convince the board that I am reckless. I need a spotless public image, and I need it immediately. A sweet, hardworking college student is exactly the kind of modesty the board will fall in love with." Elena stared at him, trying to process his words. "And what do I get out of this corporate game?" "Five million dollars," Alexander stated casually, as if he were discussing pocket change. "Paid in installments over the course of the year. Furthermore, the Vance Healthcare foundation will completely assume all financial responsibility for your brother Leo’s medical treatments, ensuring he has access to the highest-tier private care and experimental drug therapies in perpetuity, entirely free of charge." Five million dollars. Absolute safety for Leo. It was everything she had prayed for, handed to her on a silver platter by a man who looked like a beautiful, dark demon. "What's the catch?" Elena whispered, her voice shaking as she looked from his face to the contract. "There is always a catch with men like you." Alexander took a step closer, his towering height completely shadowing her frame. The proximity was breathtaking, the air suddenly crackling with an intense, unspoken chemistry. He reached out, his long, elegant fingers gently pushing the leather folder into her hands. "The catch, Miss Ross, is that the public must believe we are madly, irrevocably in love. There is a specific clause on page four," Alexander murmured, his icy gray eyes narrowing slightly, a chilling aura settling over his features. "It demands absolute, unquestioning obedience in public. Every look, every touch, every public statement will be dictated by me. If I tell you to kiss me in front of the cameras, you will do so without hesitation. For the next three hundred and sixty-five days, your public life belongs entirely to me." Elena looked down at the contract, a deep sense of foreboding washing over her. As she stared at the legal jargon, she felt a dark undercurrent in his eyes—a hidden, calculated motive that went far beyond a simple corporate board dispute. He wasn't just buying a fiancée; he was trapping her. Her hand trembled as she held the pen he offered, staring at the blank line at the bottom of the page, completely caught in his web.
