Chapter 9

“Stay close to me,” Helan Li Qiang commanded as he moved to stand next to Shangguan Ning. Together, they faced the devils, determined to repel the attack and ensure their journey to the demon empire continued, unbroken. The devils, having executed their plan to separate the two, now surrounded both Helan Li Qiang and Shangguan Ning. Helan Li Qiang found himself facing a swarm of enemies, while Shangguan Ning stood face to face with the five devil generals. Despite their best efforts to divide them, both Helan Li Qiang and Shangguan Ning maintained their composure, easily gaining the upper hand. Helan Li Qiang moved with the skill and ferocity that earned him his reputation in battle. His sword danced through the air, cutting down enemy after enemy with precise strikes. His presence on the battlefield was commanding, and despite the sheer number of devils, none could stand up to his might. Yet, even as he fought, his mind was on Shangguan Ning, trusting in his partner's abilities but unwilling to let him face danger alone. Meanwhile, Shangguan Ning, elegant as ever, stood tall against the five generals. His movement, though restricted by the wedding hanfu and veil, was still fluid and graceful. But he knew he couldn't continue like this for long. Seeing that his attire hindered his mobility, he summoned his magic, materializing a flute in his hand—a seemingly delicate instrument, but in his hands, it became a deadly weapon. He lifted the flute to his lips, and with each note he played, waves of powerful energy shot forth. The melodies, soft and enchanting, contrasted sharply with the lethal force they unleashed. Each note manifested into sharp, precise attacks, slicing through the air toward the generals. The first general lunged toward him, but a swift note sent an energy blade cutting through the air, halting the general's advance. The second and third generals charged together, but Ning's melody changed, and a burst of forceful sound waves sent them crashing back. Despite their brute strength, the generals struggled to match the elegance and control of Ning's musical attacks. All the while, Shangguan Ning maintained his composure, ensuring that the veil stayed in place. His appearance remained flawless, his movements refined, as if he were performing an intricate dance rather than battling. The devils, initially confident in their ability to overwhelm the prince consort, now found themselves at a disadvantage. The music he played, though hauntingly beautiful, carried a dangerous edge that none of them could counter. From a distance, Helan Li Qiang fought fiercely but couldn’t help but notice the deadly precision of Shangguan Ning’s attacks. Despite being separated, there was a silent understanding between them, their fighting styles complementing each other even from afar. As the battle raged on, it became clear that the devils had underestimated both Shangguan Ning and Helan Li Qiang. Though separated, they were not weakened. Instead, their individual strengths were shining through, and the devils were beginning to falter. The devils, seeing they were at a disadvantage, quickly retreated, leaving the battlefield to the victorious. Helan Li Qiang immediately made his way to Shangguan Ning, concern evident in his eyes. "Are you alright?" he asked, his voice gentle but firm. Shangguan Ning gave a small nod, indicating that he was unharmed. Around them, the aftermath of the battle was clear—casualties on both sides, with demons and Wu dynasty guards among the injured. Mu Qin, Helan Li Qiang’s right-hand man, approached and said, "Your Highness, I’ve already sent word to the demon empire. There are many wounded, and reinforcements will take time to arrive." Hearing this, Shangguan Ning looked at the injured and offered a solution. "Why don’t I help with the healing?" he suggested. Helan Li Qiang, curious, asked, "Oh? How do you intend to heal them?" Shangguan Ning didn’t answer directly. Instead, he turned to Cong and instructed him to retrieve the guqin, one of the dowries he had received. Once the instrument was brought to him, Shangguan Ning calmly sat down on the ground, disregarding Cong’s attempts to stop him from sitting on the ground. As Shangguan Ning began playing the guqin, the battlefield grew silent. The calm and serene melody flowed like a gentle river, and the once tense air started to soften. The notes carried a warmth that reached deep into the wounded soldiers and demons, healing their injuries and stabilizing their chaotic Qi. The demon guards, Wu dynasty soldiers, and even Helan Li Qiang could feel the restorative energy flowing through them. Cuts and bruises began to close, broken bones mended, and the once fatigued fighters regained their strength. The power in Shangguan Ning’s music was undeniable, and it quickly became clear that his abilities extended far beyond mere combat. He wasn’t just a prince consort; he was a healer, someone who could bring balance and peace through the art of his music. Helan Li Qiang, standing close by, watched Shangguan Ning with a sense of awe. Though he had seen Ning's battle prowess before, this side of him—calm, compassionate, and capable of immense healing—was something he had not expected. There was more to this man than met the eye, and it stirred something deeper within the demon prince. "Your abilities... they're incredible," Helan Li Qiang said quietly, his gaze fixed on Shangguan Ning as he continued to play. Shangguan Ning glanced up briefly, offering a small nod in acknowledgment, but his focus remained on the music. His fingers danced across the strings with expert precision, and the melody only deepened, bringing greater comfort and relief to those around them. Mu Qin, the right hand of Helan Li Qiang, watched in astonishment as the injured men who had been on the verge of death were now breathing steadily, their wounds visibly healing. "Such power... it's beyond what I imagined," he muttered under his breath. When the song finally came to an end, the battlefield felt completely transformed. What had once been a scene of bloodshed and chaos was now filled with a strange peace. Those who had been injured now looked revitalized, and the spirits of the men were lifted. Shangguan Ning slowly stood, his body graceful even after exerting so much energy. "They should recover faster now," he said softly, his voice still carrying the calmness of the music. Helan Li Qiang stepped closer to him, his expression serious but softened by a hint of admiration. "Thank you. You've done more than I could have asked for." Shangguan Ning, still holding the guqin, simply smiled. "It was nothing. After all, we can't continue without strong soldiers, can we?" With the devils in retreat and their own forces now healing, the path ahead seemed clearer. The two races, once wary of each other, had found common ground in their battle against a shared enemy. And now, with Shangguan Ning's healing touch, their alliance felt stronger than ever. After Shangguan Ning finished playing the guqin, he suddenly coughed up blood, causing shock among both the Wu and demon guards, as well as Helan Li Qiang. "Your Highness!" Cong shouted as he quickly moved to support Shangguan Ning, who nearly collapsed. "It's alright, no need to worry. I fought fiercely with the five devil generals and used my energy to aid in healing. I'm simply exhausted," Shangguan Ning reassured them. "Are you sure?" Helan Li Qiang asked, his concern evident. Shangguan Ning nodded in confirmation. "Take the consort to the carriage so he can rest," Helan Li Qiang commanded. After four hours of waiting, reinforcements from the demon empire arrived. They swiftly assisted with the carriages and supplies, and the group resumed their journey to the demon empire. Upon arriving, the scene was surprising. Contrary to expectations, the demon empire wasn’t all dark and foreboding. It had many clans, with beautiful landscapes accented by a subtle touch of darkness. The Demon Emperor had six sons, including Helan Li Qiang. Before heading to the second prince's manor, they first needed to complete the wedding rites within the demon empire. Shangguan Ning, now fully healed, stood beside Helan Li Qiang as they performed the wedding ceremony in the demon empire’s main palace. They paid their respects to the Demon Emperor, officially concluding the ritual. The Demon Emperor then announced a grand banquet to celebrate the union, scheduled for the following day. Afterward, Helan Li Qiang and Shangguan Ning retired to the second prince’s manor to complete the final wedding rites in the bedchamber. As Shangguan Ning and Helan Li Qiang entered the second prince's manor, the atmosphere shifted to one of intimacy and solemnity. The grand halls of the manor were lit by soft, glowing lanterns, casting gentle light over the intricately designed walls and pillars. The servants guided them to the bedchamber, which was adorned with silk drapes and a bed set with luxurious fabrics fit for royalty. Shangguan Ning, fully recovered from his earlier exhaustion, still carried a graceful poise, though there was a slight tension in the air. Helan Li Qiang, ever mindful, took Shangguan Ning's hand gently, leading him towards the ceremonial bed. Tradition dictated that the couple complete the final rites of their union in the privacy of the bedchamber, symbolizing their official bond as consort and prince. "Are you truly feeling better?" Helan Li Qiang asked quietly, his eyes filled with concern. "I am," Shangguan Ning replied softly, a faint smile crossing his lips. "It was simply exhaustion from the earlier battle and healing. I am ready to continue." The final rites of the wedding involved sharing wine from a ceremonial cup, a symbol of their unity and mutual support. They performed the ritual, exchanging the cup with solemn grace, their eyes meeting in a moment of understanding and acceptance of their new roles together. Once the rites were completed, the servants respectfully withdrew from the room, leaving the two of them alone. The weight of the day's events and their new life together began to settle in, but there was a quiet sense of harmony between them. Though their union had been arranged for political reasons, the respect and care they were beginning to show for one another spoke of a deeper connection that might develop in time. With the ceremonial part of their marriage now complete, the two shared a quiet moment, the air thick with unspoken promises and the anticipation of the days to come in the demon empire. The tension in the bedchamber grew as Helan Li Qiang and Shangguan Ning sat awkwardly on the bed, neither quite sure what to say. Helan Li Qiang cleared his throat, breaking the silence. "You should rest tonight, especially after the intense battle we had earlier. Tomorrow's banquet will be demanding." Shangguan Ning nodded, understanding the need for rest. "I'll sleep on the floor, and you can take the bed," Helan Li Qiang suggested. "That's not necessary," Shangguan Ning said softly. "Why not share the bed with me?" Helan Li Qiang hesitated for a moment, but after considering, he eventually agreed and joined Shangguan Ning on the bed.
