Chapter 8

The morning sun filtered through the curtains, casting a soft glow across the room as Shangguan Ning prepared for the momentous day. His personal attendants moved gracefully around him, carefully dressing him in the wedding hanfu sent by the second prince of the demon empire, Helan Li Qiang. The hanfu was unlike anything Shangguan Ning had ever worn—its fabric was dark with intricate silver embroidery that shimmered under the light, symbolizing the union of the Wu Dynasty and the demon empire. "Your Imperial Highness, you look magnificent," Cong said as he adjusted the final layer of the robe. His tone was respectful, though the weight of the day seemed to hang in the air. The hanfu was befitting a man of Ning’s status, with a design that was regal but not overly adorned. The minimal accessories highlighted his noble demeanor, ensuring that while his beauty was unmistakable, his appearance still carried the dignity of a prince. As part of the tradition, a veil was draped over his head, the soft material obscuring his face but still allowing a glimpse of his delicate features. Shangguan Ning’s expression was serene, though his heart carried the weight of the decision made for him—an alliance that was meant to bring peace between two races. Once the preparations were complete, Shangguan Ning stepped into his carriage. The atmosphere outside his estate was filled with anticipation. Servants, guards, and attendants all gathered to see him off, their expressions a mix of sadness and pride. The carriage, pulled by strong horses, was ornately decorated with banners and symbols of the Wu Dynasty, marking the occasion of an imperial wedding. As the wheels began to turn, Shangguan Ning looked out through the slightly parted veil. His thoughts drifted to the ceremony that awaited him at the palace and the life that would follow after. "Today, I seal my fate for the peace of our people," he murmured quietly, though Cong, seated beside him, overheard. "It is an honorable sacrifice, Your Imperial Highness," Cong reassured, his voice steady though a trace of sadness lingered. The carriage made its way through the streets of the capital, heading toward the grand palace where the ceremonial rites would take place before they departed for the demon empire. The path was lined with citizens who had come to witness the historic union, their cheers and well-wishes following the procession as it passed. Upon arriving at the palace, the grandeur of the imperial court was on full display. Ministers, officers, and noble families had all gathered, their gazes fixed on the impending union between the Wu Dynasty and the demon empire. The demon envoys, including Helan Li Qiang, were already present, standing before the emperor. The air was filled with an aura of formality and expectancy as Shangguan Ning stepped out of the carriage, his veiled form capturing the attention of all. With slow, measured steps, he entered the grand hall where the ceremony would begin. This was the first stage of his journey—one that would ultimately lead him far beyond the borders of his homeland. Shangguan Ning stood beside Helan Li Qiang, the second prince of the demon empire, as they made their way to the front of the ceremonial hall. The silence in the grand palace was almost palpable, filled with the weight of the moment. The veiled Shangguan Ning felt the firm yet gentle hold of Helan Li Qiang's hand, steadying him as they approached the altar. The grand eunuch’s voice echoed through the hall, signaling the start of the marriage ceremony. “Let us begin the ceremonial rites!” The State Preceptor, robed in traditional garments of the Wu Dynasty, stood before them to guide the ancient rites. His voice was solemn as he spoke the first command. “Bow to the heavens and earth.” Both Shangguan Ning and Helan Li Qiang bowed deeply, their movements synchronized. The hall was filled with a quiet reverence as those watching sensed the significance of this union—not only for the couple but for the future of both empires. “Bow to the parents,” the State Preceptor continued. Shangguan Ning’s heart tightened slightly as he bowed, thinking of his parents who were far away on their travels. Helan Li Qiang’s gesture was similarly respectful, although his gaze remained calm and composed throughout. “And now, bow to each other.” Shangguan Ning and Helan Li Qiang turned to face each other, their faces mere inches apart despite the veil. They bowed with grace and formality, sealing the ceremony in the eyes of all present. As they rose, the emperor spoke from his throne, his voice filled with a mix of pride and sadness. “Ning’er, you’ll be away from your home for a long time. Stay safe, and remember that you will always have a place here.” Shangguan Ning lifted his veil slightly, just enough for his eyes to meet his uncle's. "Thank you, uncle emperor," he replied softly. His heart was heavy with the realization that his life was about to change forever, but he kept his expression composed, accepting the fate he had been given for the sake of peace. The ceremony was complete. Now, all that remained was the final journey to the demon empire. As the procession made its way from the palace, Shangguan Ning was seated inside the carriage, veiled and adorned in the wedding hanfu sent by Helan Li Qiang. In front of the procession, Helan Li Qiang rode a horse, following the tradition of leading the way as the groom. The demon empire's envoys were seated in carriages behind them, while both Wu dynasty and demon empire guards marched alongside, vigilant and prepared for any unforeseen events. The road was calm at first, with nothing but the sound of hooves, wheels, and the faint rustling of the wind. But suddenly, they felt it—a shift in the air, a heavy presence that sent ripples through the atmosphere. The entire procession halted abruptly, tension rising as the guards exchanged concerned looks. Helan Li Qiang immediately dismounted from his horse, his instincts sharp. “Something’s off,” he muttered to himself. Before anyone could react further, dark shadows appeared from the trees and the surrounding area. A group of devils—creatures devoid of reason and driven by their thirst for power—emerged, launching an assault. Inside the carriage, Shangguan Ning's sharp senses alerted him to a dark presence approaching rapidly. Without even needing to see it, he raised his hand and effortlessly repelled the incoming attack, sending a wave of energy that deflected the projectile before it could touch him. The sheer force of his defense sent the nearby trees swaying and startled those around. “Protect the prince consort!” one of the demon guards shouted, immediately moving to shield Shangguan Ning's carriage. The Wu dynasty guards and the demon empire guards formed a defensive line around the carriage, swords drawn and ready for battle. Helan Li Qiang, already gripping his sword, was in the center of the action, cutting down devils as they attempted to break through the line. His expression was fierce, a reminder of why he was feared on the battlefield. “These devils... they’re after the prince consort,” Helan Li Qiang growled. His eyes darted toward Shangguan Ning’s carriage, where he could sense a powerful aura radiating from within. Shangguan Ning, despite being protected by the guards, did not cower. Instead, he opened the carriage door and stepped out, still veiled but radiating calm authority. With a simple gesture, he gathered energy in his hands, preparing to fight alongside the guards. The devils hesitated for a moment, sensing the immense power emanating from both the second prince and the prince consort, but it only fueled their aggression further.
