Who Is M?

Chapter 14: Who Is M? Eliza didn't touch the pen. Damian watched her, patient, like a man who had all the time in the world. The text on her phone glowed. Unknown number. One line: If you sign, you can't leave. Ever. -M "M?" Her voice came out dry. "Who is M?" Damian didn't answer. He walked to the window of the penthouse. Accra's skyline stretched behind him, lights flickering like warnings. "You should delete that," he said finally. "Why? Because it's true?" She stood up, chair scraping the floor. "Clause 7 is a lie. You changed it after I read it in Accra." He turned. "I didn't change anything. You just didn't read the fine print." The door opened before she could respond. A woman stepped in. Late 30s. Sharp suit. Eyes that had seen too many contracts break. "Damian," she said. "We need to talk. Now." Her gaze landed on Eliza. Then on the phone in Eliza's hand. "You're M," Eliza whispered. The woman didn't deny it. "I'm his lawyer. And if you sign that, I can't get you out." Damian's smile vanished. "Maya, you're not supposed to be here." Maya pulled out her own copy of the contract. She flipped to the last page and pointed. "Because page 12 isn't in the version you gave her." Eliza's stomach dropped. There was another page? The room went dead quiet. Maya. The lawyer. The `M` from the texts. She stood between Eliza and Damian like a wall. Her own copy of the contract in her hand. Page 12 open. "There’s an addendum," Maya said. Her eyes didn’t leave Eliza. "Clause 12.1. You never saw it." Eliza looked at Damian. "You hid a page?" Damian’s jaw was tight. "Maya, put it down." "No," Maya said. "Because she deserves to know." She turned the paper to Eliza. "Read it." Eliza’s hands shook as she took it. `Clause 12.1: In the event of voluntary termination by the Wife, all assets, shares, and holdings transferred to the Wife during the term of marriage revert to the Husband, plus a penalty of 20% of total estate value.` Eliza’s stomach dropped again. Harder this time. "Twenty percent?" she whispered. "Of your estate?" Damian didn’t answer. "That’s not a marriage contract," Maya said. "That’s a trap." Eliza looked up at Damian. "Is this why you tore the other one? Because this one is worse?" Damian stepped forward. "It’s not worse. It’s protection." "Protection for who?" Eliza’s voice cracked. "Not me." "For the company," he said. "For my family. If you’d left with half of Hale Corp—" "I didn’t ask for half of Hale Corp," she cut in. "I asked for a way out." Maya closed the folder. "You can’t leave, Eliza. Not without losing everything. Including the apartment. The car. The trust fund he set up last month." Eliza’s knees went weak. "You gave me a trust fund?" "To keep you," Damian said quietly. "Yes." The truth hit like a slap. All the gifts. The penthouse. The driver. The card with no limit. It wasn’t love. It was leverage. Eliza dropped the paper. "I stayed because I thought you tore the contract." "I did," Damian said fast. "That one. Not this one." "So you lied." "I omitted," he corrected. "There’s a difference." Maya laughed. No humor in it. "He’s been doing that for ten years." She looked at Damian. "You should’ve told her, Damian. Before she fell for you." Eliza’s eyes filled. "Did you plan this? From day one?" Damian was silent. That was the answer. Eliza stepped back. Toward the door. "I’m not signing anything." "If you walk out now," Maya said, "you leave with the clothes on your back. Clause 12.1 activates the second you breach." Eliza’s hand was on the knob. "Then I breach." "Eliza—" Damian started. "No," she said. "You read it wrong, Damian. You thought I wanted your money. I didn’t. I wanted you." She opened the door. "Wait," he said. She stopped. Didn’t turn. "If you leave," he said, "I lose you. And I lose the company." Eliza looked over her shoulder. "Then you should’ve chosen better." She walked out. The door closed behind her. Maya exhaled. "You’re an idiot." Damian didn’t look at her. He looked at the empty hallway. "I know." He picked up the contract. Page 12. He ripped it. Once. Twice. Until it was confetti on his floor. "Call the board," he said. "I’m removing Clause 12.1. Effective now." Maya blinked. "You can’t. It’s binding." "Watch me," Damian said. "Because I’m not losing her over paper." He walked to the door. Opened it. Eliza was still there. In the hall. She hadn’t left yet. He didn’t say anything. He just held out his hand. Empty. No pen. No paper. "Choose me," he said. "Not the contract. Me." Eliza stared at his hand. Then she took it. **End of Chapter 14** Her fingers were cold in his. Damian didn’t pull her in. He didn’t kiss her. He just held on. Like if he let go, she’d disappear. Maya was still in the room behind them. Watching. "You’re making a mistake," Maya said. "Legally." Damian didn’t look back. "Then fire me as a client." Maya blinked. "What?" "I’m done," he said. "With hidden pages. With traps. With you running my marriage." He squeezed Eliza’s hand. "If you want to represent Hale Corp, do it. But you don’t represent us anymore." Eliza’s breath caught. `Us.` Maya’s face went tight. She picked up her briefcase. "You’ll regret this, Damian."Maya’s hand was on the briefcase. Her eyes were cold. "She’ll cost you everything," Maya said. "Hale Corp. The board. Your father." Damian didn’t flinch. "Then let it cost me." He looked at Eliza. "I’m not signing another paper. Not hiding another page. Not doing this without her." Maya shook her head. "You’re throwing away ten years for a three-month mistake." "She wasn’t a mistake," Damian said. "You were." Maya’s lips pressed thin. She didn’t argue. She just left. The door shut hard behind her. The office was quiet again. Eliza let out a breath she didn’t know she was holding. "You just fired your lawyer. For me." "For us," Damian corrected. He stepped closer. "I’m done choosing the company over you." Eliza looked at him. Really looked. No suit armor. No CEO mask. Just a man who ripped up millions to keep her. "What happens now?" she asked. "Now?" Damian took her hand again. "Now we start over. No contract. No clauses. No M." He led her to the couch. Sat down. Pulled her with him. "Tell me something," he said. "Anything. Not about the contract. About you." Eliza hesitated. Then she leaned her head on his shoulder. "I hate coffee." Damian laughed. Actually laughed. "Good. I hate tea." They sat there. No paper between them. For the first time, it was just Damian and Eliza. **End of Chapter 14**
