“All of this was a waste.” Susan gathered up a clump of soggy ribbons and dumped them in the trash can. After an hour of cleaning, the yard was almost clear of any hint of decorations or trash. All of their work from the previous evening was gone. John put a hand on her back and smiled reassuringly. “At least we have the cake,” he reminded her. She took his hand in hers and squeezed. It was difficult not to cry, but she really didn"t want to do that in front of everyone. They were trying so hard to cheer her up. Between Meg pulling out an old two tape stereo and playing mixed tapes of songs from the eighties, and Nicole going crazy putting together food platters and making sure everyone was fed, she knew they were blessed with wonderful friends.
