43Once Eddie Jr. had calmed down--and apologized to Otto for trashing his desk--we walked him out of the police station. We lingered on the sidewalk out front, blinking and flinching in the bright afternoon sun like we’d just rolled out of bed. A terrible new future was roaring toward us, and we had to face it.
