Chapter 23- Busy Day

Elise wakes to her alarm much earlier than she would prefer, to prepare for her clinical experience on Monday. Gwyn stayed with Charlie again, so dressed in work uniform with clinical smock, required patches, and student ID clearly displayed, Elise drove to the hospital alone. It’s mid morning when she arrives on the ICU to gather her information and the unit appears quite busy considering, especially for a Sunday. Weekends are usually slower because they do not schedule surgeries, but there are many other reasons ICUs are utilized. Elise does her best to gather information but not intrude on the employees working. The patient she has been assigned on Monday is an elderly woman named Hazel. Hazel is from out of town and needed more intricate care than what the local hospital could give her. Arrhythmias are tricky to treat because it often takes a multifaceted approach. Cardiologists are attempting to treat the heart rhythm abnormalities with medications in hopes of avoiding surgery. However, in the mean time, they are using IV heparin to thin the blood enough to prevent clots but not so much to cause internal bleeding. Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) is also a minor issue for this patient, so there are medications, including diuretics, a special low sodium diet, and while in distress, a fluid restriction to help prevent further edema. 

The most difficult part of this patient preparation was going to be looking up all the medications before tomorrow morning since Elise worked tonight. All information collected, about two hours later, she was ready to leave the nurse’s station and go do some research prior to work. In comes Kam, grabbing her phone and purse to go on lunch break. Kam noticed her first and said, “El, is that you?”

“Well Kam, hello. I was hoping I’d bump into you before I left.”

“Hey, I’m heading to lunch. Care to join me? Looking at her watch she says, I now have 29 minutes.” Kam smiles at Elise as she waits for an answer.

“Yeah, I’d love to. I was just leaving anyway.” Both Elise and Kameron head down the hallway toward the cafeteria together. “So how is your weekend going?”

“Well, today has been busy but better than yesterday. We had several codes yesterday and ended up losing a patient. So I was pretty drained last night…. your text made me smile though. Thank you for that.”

Elise nodded before answering, “I was working too, so I figured you’d get it when you got off of work.”

As they arrived at the cafeteria, Kam asked, “You hungry or thirsty? My treat.”

“You don’t have to buy for me. Yeah I’m both actually.”

“Come on El, I insist. I invited you.” Kam leads the way through the tray line and they both order and choose their food and drinks and proceed to the cashier. As she had offered, Kameron paid for both meals and then led the way to a back corner, away from others as much as possible. The cafeteria was less busy than on a weekday, so that was nice. Both ate their sandwiches; Kam had yogurt and coffee while Elise had fruit and a diet pop. Once finished, Kam asked Elise if she would visit the restroom with her on her way out. Elise gave her a funny expression but agreed to go with her. Trays left on the dirty dish cart, both ladies headed toward the employee restroom on this floor. Kam wiggled the handle and found it unlocked so opened the door and entered. Elise stopped outside the door, unsure what to do since this bathroom was a single bathroom and there were two of them. The door closed but thirty seconds later, Kam opened it from the inside, reached out and grabbed Elise’s hand and pulled her in the bathroom with her. Elise gasped because she caught her off guard, but didn’t resist. Kam pulled her just inside the door, then shut the door by pushing Elise’s back against it and locking it. Even before the door was closed, one of Kam’s hands was on El’s cheek and pulling her down so she could take her mouth. There was no gentleness, no buildup. It was just outright passion that after only a few seconds, Elise partook in. Elise was surprised she didn’t feel frightened by Kam’s aggression in the least, and actually felt elated at being the object of her affections. By the time Kam pulled back to take a breath, both of them were breathing hard and smiling. “I wanted to do that from the moment I saw you in the nurse’s station.”

Kam puts her head on El’s chest and snuggles in. Elise instinctively puts her arms around her and rubs her back and shoulders, just enjoying their closeness. Kam took a deep breath and smelled Elise’s Yummy scent of vanilla and lavender. Kam thought it was her new favorite scent. “I know it’s only been a day and a half, but I’ve missed you.”

Elise smiled hearing Kam admit she missed her. “Yeah, I was dreaming about you the last two nights, but… reality is so much better.” 

“Alright, I'm sorry babe, but I have to get back. I’m lucky to have gotten a lunch break, I don’t want to push my luck when we are busy.” Kam tilted her head back from Elise’s chest and kissed her again. “If you want to call me tonight, I can try to stay up?”

Elise thought a minute, “as much as I’d like that, I have clinicals in the morning, so I need to get some sleep. That is after I finish my research after my shift tonight. Going to be a short night I’m afraid. I promise I’ll be thinking of you though.”

Kam looks her in the eye, nods, smiles, kisses her firmly one more time, and goes out the door to return to work. Elise locked the door and used the facilities since she was there. After washing and freshening up, Elise makes the trek to the unit where she works. Setting her alarm for 2pm she has a chance to clean up her supplies and get ready to be to work on time with about an hour and a half left to research. Quite a hectic day, but graduation is so close Elise could almost taste it. 

Work went fairly well without too many hiccups. Elise’s breaks were working breaks to help finish her work and get as much sleep tonight as possible. Elise was home and ready for bed by 1:00AM. Alarm set for morning and everything out and ready to go, Elise was asleep shortly after her head hit the pillow. Her last thought was how Kam had pulled her into the bathroom and kissed her senseless. In fact, Elise fell asleep with a smile on her face and hoped she would see Kam again very soon.
