Sophia's welcome-back banquet was held on the top floor of Foster Club.
When I followed Wesley inside, the private room instantly fell silent.
Soon, someone started teasing him.
"Mr. Foster, your lovesickness is getting a little too serious."
"Miss Sutton hasn't even arrived yet, but the substitute is already here."
I stood at the door, feeling as if I had been stripped naked and placed directly in front of everyone.
Wesley said flatly, "She's timid. Don't scare her."
But in the next second, he pressed me into the chair at the very end of the table.
"Sit here."
Everyone at the table understood immediately.
I was not his date. I was just someone he had brought along for amusement.
Someone pushed a glass of wine in front of me and even reached out to pull me.
"Little girl, why don't you drink one for Mr. Foster?"
The moment that person's fingers touched me, Wesley smashed the wineglass in his hand over.
The glass shattered beside that person's feet, and red wine splashed across the floor.
Wesley still had a smile on his face, but his eyes had already turned cold.
"Who told you that you could touch what's mine?"
That person's face turned pale at once, and he hurriedly apologized.
I stared blankly at Wesley.
Wesley bent down and straightened my clothes for me.
His voice was very low, low enough that only I could hear him.
"You're so stupid. Don't you know how to dodge?"
Just then, Sophia arrived.
She wore a black suit, and her whole person looked capable and sharp, like a blade drawn from its sheath.
The moment Wesley saw her, his gaze visibly changed.
Someone started cheering and said, "Now that Miss Sutton is back, Mr. Foster finally has something to look forward to."
Sophia glanced at me.
"Is that so? Doesn't Mr. Foster already have someone by his side?"
Everyone's gaze fell on me once again.
Wesley picked up his wineglass, his tone very calm.
"She doesn't count."
At that moment, I suddenly felt as if the white dress on my body was so tight that I could barely breathe.
Sophia did not sit down right away. Instead, she took a phone call.
On the other end, a man's voice trembled badly.
"Miss Sutton, I'll sign right away. I won't short you a single cent."
Wesley looked at her, his eyes bright enough to seem almost burning.
"That's what I like most about you."
Sophia raised an eyebrow. "What?"
"You're smart enough, and ruthless enough."
When he said that, his gaze swept over me from the corner of his eye.
"Unlike certain Kitties, who look stupid even when they try to act smart."
Sophia took out a stack of documents and handed them to me.
"Miss Hayes, make a copy of these for me. It's better for a girl to be exposed to some proper work than to only know how to spend a man's money."
I took the documents and turned to leave.
When the copier lit up with white light, I turned to the first page, and my fingers suddenly stopped.
There were a few lines inside that were almost identical to a post I had written back in university.
But now, those words appeared in Sophia's documents.
I did not think any further.
I also had no right to question her here.
I simply copied the documents, then carried them back to the private room.
As I passed by the restroom, a woman deliberately bumped into me.
Red wine spilled onto my white dress.
She pretended to be surprised and said, "Oh, sorry. I thought you were a server."
She smiled and handed me a tissue.
"Mr. Foster probably won't mind, right? After all, it doesn't really matter if a substitute gets a little dirty."
When I returned to the private room, the red wine stain on my dress had not yet been wiped clean.
Wesley saw it and frowned.
"How are you this stupid? You can even manage to dirty a dress."
I stood in front of them like a joke made specifically to make Sophia look dignified.
When the gathering was almost over, Wesley asked Sophia to look over the materials for the Dawnlight Law Firm project.
As I put down the copies, I only glanced at them in a hurry, but I immediately saw that something was wrong.
There was a trap hidden in this document.
If Foster Group signed according to the contents above, it would definitely suffer even worse losses later.
I hesitated for a moment, but still reminded him quietly, "There's a problem with this clause."
The private room instantly fell silent.
Wesley looked up at me.
"What did you say?"
I pointed at that line.
"There's a problem here."
Wesley looked at me for two seconds and frowned.
"Kitty, don't try to be clever."
Sophia put down her wineglass and looked at me with a frown.
"Miss Hayes, did you touch my materials in private?"
The smile on Wesley's face vanished instantly.
"Give me your phone."
I froze.
His tone grew heavier.
"Mia, give me your phone."
I looked at him helplessly.
"I didn't sneak a look."
"I know you don't have that ability."
He said it so naturally, as if he were stating a fact.
"But I don't like you using Sophia's affairs to fight for attention."
I could only endure the humiliation and hand him my phone.
In front of Sophia, Wesley went through all my chat records, photo albums, and notes.
He did not search very carefully.
But it was already humiliating enough.
That night, after returning to Azure Law Firm, I found an old email in my phone's trash folder.
It was from Julian three years ago.
Back then, my father had kept my ID from me, and everyone thought I had already withdrawn from school and accepted my fate.
Only Julian had sent me one message.
Julian: I'm keeping a place for you. Whenever you want to come back, the doors of Clearview Law Firm will always be open.
I stared at that email and suddenly remembered what he had said back then.
He had said that Clearview Law Firm did not lack obedient people. It lacked people who dared to stand at the negotiation table.
I had never dared reply to that email.
Because I was afraid Wesley would find out.
