Chapter 3

815 Words
The Dawnlight Law Firm project ran into trouble one week later. Foster Group signed the contract according to Sophia's plan. As a result, the other party turned around and dragged Foster Group into a huge mess. When Sophia came to Azure Law Firm, it was obvious that she had not slept all night. Her eyes were still a little red. Wesley personally poured her a glass of water. "It wasn't your fault." Sophia lowered her head, her voice a little hoarse. "But only a few people saw the materials. I don't want to suspect anyone, but…" She did not finish. But Wesley had already understood what she meant. He told Sophia to go rest first, then called me into the study. There was a statement on the desk. It said that because I was jealous of Sophia, I had secretly read the materials and spread information recklessly, eventually causing trouble for Foster Group. At the end of the statement, it demanded that I apologize publicly and promise never to touch anything related to law again. My whole body trembled as I looked at him in disbelief. "You think I did it?" Wesley leaned against the desk and lit a cigarette. "Of course, I know it wasn't you." But in the next second, he said, "But Sophia needs an explanation." "You have no reputation and no job. It doesn't matter if you get a little dirty." It felt as if someone had stabbed me hard in the chest. He raised his hand to touch my face, his movement still so gentle. "Sophia relies on her reputation to make a living. She can't have a stain on it." I turned my head and avoided his hand. His gaze turned cold. "I spent three million dollars to buy you back from your father. Now I'm only asking you to sign one piece of paper, and you want to turn against me?" Just then, my phone rang. It was my mother calling. She cried and said, "Mia, your father owes money again. The creditors are already blocking our front door. Can you beg Mr. Foster and ask him to send us some more money?" My throat tightened. "Mom, I can't." The other end of the line went quiet for a moment. Then she started cursing loudly. "You wretched girl! I'm only asking you to get some money, and you still refuse! Do you want to watch us get forced to death by creditors? I'm warning you. Don't think you're untouchable just because you're with Mr. Foster!" Wesley watched my face grow paler and paler, then reached out and took my phone away. "See? These are the family members you talk about." He took my ID out of the drawer and pressed it on top of the statement. "Sign it, and I'll give your ID back." After going round and round, everyone was teaching me the same thing: Mia, you have no right to decide where you want to go. Wesley's voice softened again. "Kitty, don't force me. After this matter passes, I'll open a small studio for you." I looked up at him. "You mean that?" Wesley nodded and wiped away the small tear at the corner of my eye. "Mia, I still don't want you to be too smart. Someone as smart as Sophia can't be held by anyone." My attitude was very firm. "I won't sign." Wesley stared at me for a long time. "Mia, do you think you still have a way out?" "Then I'll let you see how those people outside will devour you." That night, he froze my supplementary card. The servants were withdrawn. There was only half a bottle of cold water and a carton of expired milk left in the fridge. Bodyguards stood watch at the door and would not let me go out. Before the maid left, she threw that copy of Labor Law onto the floor. "Mr. Foster said that since you understand so much, you can take care of yourself." I bent down to pick up the book. But a sudden cramp twisted through my stomach, and the pain sent me straight to my knees. I wanted to call a doctor. Through the door, the security guard said, "Mr. Foster gave orders. Before Miss Hayes thinks things through, no one is allowed to go in." At one in the morning, Wesley came. He carried me to the sofa, poured me hot water, then placed his palm over my stomach and slowly rubbed it for me. The pain made my eyes burn. He lowered his head and looked at me. "Kitty, do you know who's keeping you now?" In that instant, all the blood in my body turned cold. That night, I replied to Julian's email. Mia: If Clearview Law Firm still wants me, I want to come back. Five minutes later, he replied. Julian: Mia, I'm waiting for you.
