CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX Three nights later, Kaya awoke from the high-pitched squeal of her house alarm. It took a few minutes to tell what was happening until she heard muffled voices and shuffling in her hallway. With her heart beating out her chest, she snuck from her bed and peeked out the doorway. Two men in black with baseball caps pulled over their eyes ran into her art studio. Between praying for her safety and trying to breathe, Kaya ran back into her room, grabbed the phone and call 9-1-1. “Nine-one-one emergency,” the man said. “What’s going on?” “There are two men in my house,” Kaya whispered, voice shaking as the men ransacked her studio. “I’m scared.
