Episode 6: Wolves in the Dark

455 Words
The forest was a world of shadows. Every tree seemed to lean inward, every rustle in the undergrowth whispered threats. Aria had walked for hours, her cloak torn by branches, her feet blistered, but she dared not stop. She was no longer under the pack’s protection; she was prey now, and the wilderness knew it. The first growl came from her left—low, rumbling, and too close. She froze, heart hammering, eyes darting into the dark. A second growl followed, this one from behind. Her wolf stirred uneasily inside her. Rogues. Figures emerged from the trees, their eyes gleaming with hunger, their teeth bared in wicked grins. Scarred wolves, cast out from their own packs long ago, moved like predators circling an injured deer. “Well, well,” one sneered, his voice hoarse. “A lone pup. What a gift.” Aria clenched her dagger, though it felt pitiful against the odds. “Stay back,” she warned, forcing her voice steady though her hands shook. They only laughed. The first rogue lunged, claws flashing. Aria ducked, slashing wildly, the blade grazing his arm. He snarled, stumbling back, but two more closed in. She ran. Branches whipped her face as she tore through the underbrush, breath ragged. Behind her, paws thundered against the ground. They were faster, stronger, and closing in. Her wolf screamed for her to shift, but exhaustion clawed at her bones, making the transformation nearly impossible. A rogue tackled her from the side, knocking the air from her lungs. She hit the dirt hard, her dagger slipping from her grip. The wolf’s teeth sank into her shoulder, hot pain searing through her body. She screamed, thrashing desperately. Adrenaline surged. With a cry, she drove her elbow into its snout. The rogue yelped, loosening its bite just enough for her to roll free. She scrambled, grabbing her dagger, and slashed at the beast’s face. Blood sprayed, and the rogue retreated with a howl. But there were more. Their shadows surrounded her again, snarls echoing through the trees. Her strength was fading, her shoulder burned, and her vision blurred. Just as the largest rogue leapt at her, jaws wide to finish her off— A distant howl ripped through the forest. Deep, commanding, filled with power. The rogues froze mid-attack, ears flattening, eyes darting nervously toward the sound. One by one, they backed away, growling in frustration, until the forest swallowed them again. Aria collapsed to her knees, trembling, gasping for breath. Blood soaked her torn cloak, but she was alive. Who had saved her? The howl still echoed in her ears, and deep down, her wolf stirred with a strange recognition. Whoever it was… this was not the end of her story.
