Separation
Thessaloniki, October 1978
After Leonora hung up, or rather he hung up on her, she walked into the living room, where Eleni was still playing with Lisa, seemingly unperturbed. She was feeling shaken, as though something had changed for ever and it could never be put back together, but she was not sure what it was. She had shocked herself, hearing her calm voice on the phone telling Dinos that he could take all the pills she had left for him and kill himself. Did she really mean it? What if he actually did it? Then it would just be Eleni and her. It wouldn’t be that bad, after all. It was not how she had wanted her life to be, but it could well work out better.
‘You can go now’, she said to Lisa.
‘Is everything okay, Mrs Leonora?’ asked Lisa, who seemed rather shaken hers
