(Owen’s P.O.V.)
10 minutes my ass. That walk was definitely closer to a half an hour, and now I’m absolutely starving, and Apollo is restless and won’t stop whining. I don’t know what his issue is. We’ve gone a long time without eating before and he never acted this way.
Dude we’re here now and I’m headed to the food court. One more escalator ride, and we’ll eat. Calm the hell down.
My wolf just whined in response.
I rolled my eyes and walked over to the escalator. Before I could get a foot on one of the moving steps, Apollo really started to freak out. He was jumping up and down and howling.
Apollo! Stop! We’re getting there!
Mate!!!
I stopped in my steps. Mate?? All thoughts of food disappeared as I looked all around for the girl from my dreams.
Stupid human! We’re in the human world. She won’t just be hanging out in a mall in her wolf form! Smell her out!
Shut up, Apollo!
I lifted my nose in the air and smelled for the sweet smell of lavender and vanilla from my dream. I missed it at first because it was faint, and the other human smells covered it. I followed the smell until it got stronger and stronger and almost took me over entirely. I looked at the girl who radiated the wonderful smell.
The girl had long blonde hair that fell down her back in natural curls. Her ivory skin seemed to glow under the fluorescent lights. She was laughing with another girl who had bright red hair that looked to have been colored recently based on her skin being stained around her hairline.
I slowly started walking towards her until I was close enough to hear the conversation she was having.
“Like did you know that wolves are pack animals? It’s hard for a wolf to survive without at least having a mate.” She was saying to her friend.
“A mate? Really? That’s cool.”
Her friend wouldn’t even look her in the eyes. However, she kept going with what she was saying.
“Yeah. When they find their mate, they don’t let any other wolves near it. I wonder what they do if one of them dies though. You know? Like do they find another mate?”
I was so close to her that I could see that she had blue eyes. Man, did I want to get lost in those eyes.
“And they’re only supposed to be not even three feet tall. Do you think they ever get bigger than that though?”
I smirked at that question and couldn’t help but comment on it.
“Actually, it’s believed that some wolves can grow taller than even you.”
The girl and her friend looked at me, seeming startled that I said something. I guess they didn’t hear me walk up to them.
My beloved mate’s cheeks got red and she look down at her empty froyo cup. I glanced over at her friend who was staring at me with wide eyes. I looked back at my mate as she looked back at me.
“You were right about the whole mate thing though. Once they find them, they protect them at all costs.” I leaned in trying to signal who, or rather what, I really was.
The girl lifted her eyebrow at me and I was taken back a little. She obviously didn’t understand my subtle hint.
“Are you like an expert on wolves or something?”
“You could say I have a bunch of experience with them. Almost like I was raised by them.” I smirked at my joke hoping she’d understand what I meant.
“Uhhh that’s really interesting and thanks for letting me know that I was right, but we really have to go. Right Aubrey?”
I couldn’t take my eyes off of her as I realized she didn’t know about anything that I was talking about. I took a quick whiff and under her delicious smell, she smelled human. My mate was a human.
“Yeah. Why don’t you get the girls and I’ll throw away the empty cups?”
I glanced at the friend with wide eyes and looked back at my mate standing up.
“Wait!” I said, grabbing at her arm. I wanted to see the tingles that everyone talked about. I quickly pulled away when she flinched so that I couldn’t touch her. “Sorry. I just meant; you haven’t told me your name.”
She hesitated before she started to speak, “It’s-”
“None of your business.” Her friend cut her off.
I looked over at her friend and made eye contact. She was pissed.
“Uhhh ok? I’ll get the girls.” I heard my mate say before walking off to the child’s play area.
I wanted to chase after her but the girl she called Aubrey grabbed my arm and said, “nuh uh. You’re coming with me.”
She pulled me across the giant room and around a corner where she pushed me so that I was out of sight from my mate. She glanced over her shoulder and then hissed at me, “What are you doing here?!”
