Chapter 23Outside his mum’s flat in Liverpool, Kael pulled out his phone and punched in her number. “I’m outside, Mum. Is Angel there?” He could have phoned Angel directly, but he hadn’t spoken to him in several days, waiting for Angel to phone him—which he had not. Kael had wanted to give him the space to sort out his thoughts, but this was going too far. “He went out for a walk on the dock, love. Phone his mobile,” she said. “All right, see you soon.” He hung up and began walking around the dock, over the cobbled pavements. The river always smelled salty despite it being fresh water. Kael breathed deeply, filling his lungs, taking him back to childhood when a ride on the ferry across the River Mersey with his mum was an indescribable treat.
