CHAPTER 4 — WHEN DANGER LEARNS MY NAME
Danger didn’t knock. It watched.
I felt it the first time I left Lorenzo’s building alone. The street looked ordinary—cars passing, people talking—but my skin prickled with awareness. Someone was paying attention.
“You’re tense,” Lorenzo said later that night, loosening his tie as he watched me pace his penthouse.
“I think I’m being followed,” I admitted.
He didn’t panic. He smiled—slow and lethal. “Then they’re braver than they are smart.”
That scared me more than any confirmation could have.
He pulled me close, resting his chin on my head. “I should’ve known they’d come for you.”
I stiffened. “You knew this would happen?”
“I hoped it wouldn’t,” he corrected gently. “There’s a difference.”
That was Lorenzo—never lying, even when the truth cut deep.
The next morning, a black rose was left at my door.
No note. No signature. Just a message soaked in threat.
Lorenzo crushed the stem in his fist when he saw it. “This isn’t one of mine,” he said darkly.
“Who is it?”
“Someone who wants my attention.”
“And they have it now,” I said quietly.
He studied me then, searching for fear. I was scared—but I didn’t look away. That seemed to decide something in him.
“You’re not fragile,” he murmured. “You’re fire pretending to be soft.”
Despite everything, I smiled. “Careful, boss. Compliments from you sound dangerous.”
His eyes softened. “Only because I mean them.”
That night, he held me closer than ever. Outside, enemies moved pieces on a board I was now part of.
Inside, love tightened its grip.
