Chapter thirteen the uncle

390 Words
The tension inside Adrian’s office turned suffocating. Serena looked between Damien and Adrian carefully. “Your uncle?” she repeated quietly. Adrian’s expression had completely changed. The softness from moments ago vanished instantly, replaced by the cold, unreadable mask she was beginning to hate. “When did he arrive?” Adrian asked calmly. Too calmly. “An hour ago,” Damien replied. “He’s already asking questions.” Serena frowned. “Questions about what?” Neither man answered immediately. Which meant the answer was bad. Adrian grabbed his suit jacket from the chair before turning toward her. “Go home tonight.” Her eyes narrowed instantly. “Excuse me?” “It wasn’t a suggestion.” Annoyance flared inside her immediately. “You don’t get to order me around every five seconds.” His jaw tightened slightly. “Serena.” “No. Every time something happens, you shut me out like I’m some child who can’t handle the truth.” Damien slowly backed away from the tension. “Should I disappear?” “Probably,” Serena and Adrian answered together. Damien sighed dramatically. “Terrifying soulmates.” Adrian ignored him completely. His attention stayed fixed on Serena. “You don’t understand the kind of people involved here,” he said quietly. “Then explain it to me.” For a moment, silence filled the office. Then Adrian finally spoke. “My uncle helped build Knight Empire with my father.” Serena listened carefully. “He also tried to destroy it once.” Her heartbeat slowed slightly. “What?” Damien leaned against the desk with crossed arms. “Victor Knight believes power belongs to whoever is ruthless enough to take it.” Serena looked back at Adrian. “And you think he’s dangerous?” Adrian’s eyes darkened. “I know he is.” Before Serena could respond, the office doors opened suddenly. A tall older man entered without knocking. Silver hair. Sharp dark eyes. Expensive suit. And a smile that immediately made Serena uncomfortable. “Well,” the man said smoothly, “this explains the rumors.” Adrian’s expression became ice cold. “Get out.” Victor Knight ignored him completely. Instead… His gaze settled directly on Serena. Slowly. Carefully. Like he already knew something she didn’t. And for the first time since entering Adrian’s world… Serena truly felt afraid.
