Chapter fourteen dangerous secrets

409 Words
Victor Knight’s eyes never left Serena. The uncomfortable feeling in her chest grew stronger under his stare, like he was studying her instead of simply looking at her. Adrian stepped forward immediately, placing himself between them. “I said get out.” Victor smiled calmly. “Still defensive. You sound exactly like your father.” The atmosphere inside the office became dangerously tense. Damien straightened quietly near the desk, his playful attitude completely gone now. Serena noticed it instantly. This man was not someone people relaxed around. Victor slowly adjusted the cuffs of his expensive suit before speaking again. “You must be Serena Cole.” Her stomach tightened. “How do you know my name?” Victor’s smile widened slightly. “Interesting.” Adrian’s voice turned sharp. “Enough games.” For the first time, Victor finally looked at him directly. “You’re becoming careless, Adrian.” “I’m handling my company just fine.” “This conversation isn’t about your company.” Silence. Serena’s heartbeat quickened as tension thickened between them. Something deeper was happening here. Something nobody wanted to explain. Victor walked farther into the office casually, his eyes briefly moving toward the city skyline. “Your father spent years protecting this empire,” he said quietly. “It would be unfortunate if emotions destroyed it.” Adrian’s expression darkened instantly. “This has nothing to do with Serena.” Victor looked amused by that response. “Oh, I think it has everything to do with her.” Serena felt cold suddenly. “What does that mean?” But nobody answered her. Frustration rose immediately. “Can somebody please explain what’s happening?” Victor looked at her again carefully. “You remind me of someone.” The words made Adrian move instantly. “Leave.” This time, the warning in his voice sounded deadly. Victor studied his nephew for a long moment before sighing softly. “You’re already attached to her,” he murmured. “That’s dangerous.” Adrian’s fists tightened slightly. Victor finally started toward the door, but before leaving, he paused beside Serena. And quietly said words that made her blood run cold. “Ask Adrian Knight what really happened the night your father died.” Then he walked away. Silence crashed into the room. Serena slowly turned toward Adrian. Her breathing uneven. “What… did he mean by that?” Adrian said nothing. And somehow, that terrified her more than any answer could.
