was talking. Serena noticed the whispers immediately the second she stepped into the lobby. Employees glanced at her before quickly looking away. Others weren’t subtle at all. “That’s her.” “The girl Mr. Knight keeps around.” “I heard he defended her in the boardroom.” Serena groaned softly. “Fantastic.” The elevator doors opened behind her. Instant silence filled the lobby. Adrian Knight stepped out wearing a black suit that probably cost more than her rent for a year. Everyone straightened instantly. His cold grey eyes landed directly on Serena. “Why are you standing here?” he asked. She crossed her arms. “Apparently, I’m today’s entertainment.” Adrian glanced around the lobby once. The whispers died immediately. Terrifying. “Come with me,” he said calmly. Serena followed him into the private elevator, resisting the urge to roll her eyes. The moment the doors closed, she turned toward him. “You know people think we’re secretly dating now?” Adrian looked completely unbothered. “People talk.” “Yes, but your employees look one rumor away from writing wedding invitations.” A small smirk touched his lips. Serena stared at him suspiciously. “You enjoy this.” “Watching you panic? A little.” She pointed a finger at him. “See? That right there is villain behavior.” For the first time all morning, Adrian actually laughed quietly. The sound caught Serena completely off guard. Because beneath the coldness… He suddenly looked human. The elevator stopped at the top floor. But before the doors opened, Adrian stepped closer unexpectedly. Close enough to steal her breath. His expression darkened slightly as his eyes held hers. “Let them talk, Serena.” Her heartbeat quickened. “Why?” Adrian’s voice lowered. “Because I’m starting not to care anymore.”
