Chapter Twelve — Unwanted Feelings
Serena avoided Adrian for two entire days.
Well… she tried to.
Unfortunately, avoiding Adrian Knight inside Knight Empire was almost impossible.
Everywhere she turned, his presence followed.
His voice during meetings.
His scent lingering in elevators.
His cold eyes finding her across crowded rooms.
It was exhausting.
Mostly because her heart reacted every single time.
“You’re hiding from me.”
Serena nearly jumped after hearing Adrian’s voice behind her inside the empty office lounge.
She turned quickly. “You walk too quietly.”
Adrian closed the door behind him calmly.
“You’ve been avoiding me.”
“I’ve been working.”
“You ignored three of my calls.”
Serena crossed her arms stubbornly. “You publicly announced we were dating.”
His gaze stayed fixed on her. “Did that bother you?”
“Yes!”
“Why?”
The question caught her off guard.
Because she didn’t actually know the answer.
Adrian stepped closer slowly.
“Is it the rumors?” he asked quietly.
“No.”
“The attention?”
“No.”
His eyes darkened slightly.
“Then what is it?”
Serena’s heartbeat quickened painfully.
You.
But she refused to say that aloud.
Instead, she looked away. “You make everything complicated.”
Silence filled the room for a moment.
Then Adrian spoke again.
“Serena.”
The softness in his voice startled her enough to look back at him.
Big mistake.
He was already close.
Too close.
“You’re the first person who’s treated me like a normal man in years,” he admitted quietly.
Her breath caught.
“And I don’t know what to do with that.”
The honesty in his voice felt more dangerous than his coldness ever had.
Before Serena could respond, the office doors burst open suddenly.
Damien froze immediately after seeing them standing inches apart.
“Oh,” he said awkwardly. “This feels emotional. Should I come back later?”
Serena stepped away instantly.
Adrian looked ready to murder him.
Damien raised both hands innocently. “Relax. I’m only here because there’s a problem.”
The tension in the room shifted immediately.
Adrian’s expression hardened. “What happened?”
Damien hesitated.
Then finally said the words that made Serena’s stomach drop.
“Your uncle is back.”
