LOVING YOU,MY DESIRE

CHAPTER TEN: Loving You Again The city felt different after the verdict. Not quieter—just lighter. Maryann stood by the wide window of Nathaniel’s apartment, watching the morning sun stretch across glass buildings and moving streets. For the first time in years, she wasn’t waiting for a threat, a voice, or a memory to drag her backward. The past was still there. But it no longer ruled her. Nathaniel came up behind her, careful, as if still giving her the choice of space. He always did now. His hands rested lightly at her waist, grounding but never claiming. “You’re thinking too loudly,” he said softly. She smiled. “Is that a bad thing?” “No,” he replied. “It means you’re alive in your own head again.” She turned to face him, studying the man who had once been her first love and was now becoming something deeper—her safe place, not her shelter. “I’m not scared of the quiet anymore,” she said. “That’s new.” Nathaniel brushed his thumb across her cheek. “You did the hardest part. You spoke.” “And you stayed,” she added. “I chose to,” he said firmly. “Just like I choose you now.” The words settled between them—not dramatic, not rushed. Honest. Maryann inhaled slowly. “I don’t want a love where I disappear,” she said. “I don’t want to be protected into silence.” Nathaniel nodded. “Then let’s build something where you’re seen. Fully.” Her eyes softened, emotion tightening her chest. “I don’t need saving,” she whispered. “I know,” he replied. “I just want to walk with you.” She leaned into him, forehead resting against his chest, listening to the steady rhythm of a heart that never tried to cage hers. Weeks later, Maryann stood in front of a small audience at a support center downtown. No cameras this time. No headlines. Just faces—listening. She spoke about fear. About silence. About leaving and surviving. About the moment she realized her voice was stronger than her past. In the back of the room, Nathaniel watched—not as a shield, not as a savior, but as a man in awe of the woman she had become. When she finished, the applause wasn’t loud. It was real. That night, as the city lights flickered below them, Maryann rested her head on Nathaniel’s shoulder on the balcony. “I used to think loving you again would break me,” she said quietly. “And now?” he asked. She smiled—soft, sure. “Now I know it doesn’t cost me myself.” Nathaniel kissed her temple, his voice barely a breath. “Then loving you again might be the bravest thing I’ve ever done.” They stood there together—not running, not hiding. Just choosing. And this time, love wasn’t an escape. It was home. 🌸 END 🌸
