Close Quarters Open Wounds

CHAPTER SEVEN: Close Quarters, Open Wounds Morning arrived quietly. Sunlight filtered through the tall windows of Nathaniel’s apartment, soft and almost deceptive in its calm. Maryann woke slowly, disoriented for a moment—until memory rushed back in sharp fragments. Marcus. The fight. Nathaniel’s arms around her as everything fell apart. She sat up, pulling the blanket tighter around herself. The room was unfamiliar but safe. For the first time in years, she hadn’t woken up with her heart racing. That alone felt like a miracle. Nathaniel was in the kitchen when she stepped out, sleeves rolled up, hair slightly disheveled in a way she’d never seen before. He looked less like the controlled man from the balcony and more like the boy she once loved. Her chest tightened. “You should’ve woken me,” she said softly. He turned, relief flashing briefly in his eyes before he masked it. “You needed rest.” She noticed the bruise on his jaw more clearly now. Guilt pricked her. “You’re hurt.” “I’ve been worse,” he replied lightly, then paused. “Coffee?” She nodded. They stood a little too close as he handed her the mug, their fingers brushing. The contact sent a quiet spark through her body—unexpected, unsettling. Neither of them pulled away immediately. Living together—even temporarily—suddenly felt far more dangerous than Marcus ever had. The tension followed them through the day. Nathaniel insisted she stay inside while he took calls, spoke to lawyers, and coordinated security. Maryann watched from the sofa, frustration slowly replacing fear. She had spent too many years hiding. By afternoon, she’d had enough. “I’m not fragile,” she said firmly when he returned. “I won’t spend this time cowering behind locked doors.” Nathaniel studied her, seeing something new in her eyes—not terror, but resolve. “What do you want to do?” he asked. “I want control,” she said. “I want to file my own statement. I want a restraining order. I want him to know I’m not powerless anymore.” A slow, proud smile touched his lips. “That’s my lady” She blinked. “You don’t think I’m being reckless?” “I think you’re being brave,” he replied. “And I’ll be right beside you.” Something in her chest loosened. That night, the storm came. Thunder rolled across the sky as rain lashed against the windows, echoing the night she had run away years ago. Maryann stood frozen in the living room, breath shallow, memories threatening to drag her under. Nathaniel noticed immediately. He crossed the room and stopped just in front of her—not touching yet, giving her space. “Talk to me,” he said gently. “I hate that I still react like this,” she whispered. “I hate that he still has power over my body, even when he’s not here.” Nathaniel reached out slowly, giving her time to pull away. She didn’t. His hands settled on her arms, warm and grounding. “He doesn’t,” he said firmly. “You’re here. You’re safe. And you’re not running anymore.” Her eyes lifted to his. For a moment, everything else faded—the danger, the fear, the past. There was only the way he looked at her, like she was something precious he refused to lose again. She leaned into him. The kiss this time wasn’t fragile. It was hungry, restrained, aching with everything they hadn’t said. Nathaniel’s hands slid to her waist, holding her like he’d been waiting years to do it right. Maryann’s fingers curled into his shirt, heart racing—not with fear, but with want. They broke apart, breathless. “This complicates things,” she whispered. He rested his forehead against hers. “It already was complicated.” A small laugh escaped her—a real one. Later, as Maryann lay in bed, she realized something had shifted. She wasn’t just surviving anymore. She was choosing. Speaking. Standing. And desire—real, living desire—had returned alongside her strength. Outside her door, Nathaniel remained awake, vigilant. But for the first time, Maryann knew she didn’t need saving. She had found her voice again. And together, they were becoming something Marcus Hale could never control.
