I’M TRYING TO ABSORB what I just learned when Anna tries to sit up.
“Just stay where you are, Anna,” I tell her, helping her lay back down. “EMTs are on their way. Does anything hurt?”
She looks a little confused by this question and then seems to think about it. Finally, she says, “Not really. Just my back and my head, I guess.”
I hear sirens and step out of the way as the first responders arrive. It's only then that I see one of the priests from the workshop, Father Scott, kneeling over the body of Father Tim. He finishes performing Last Rites just as the first paramedic arrives and begins his work. I can tell by the look on his face that he sees no signs of life.
