“COME ON IN, TOM,” VIVIAN says when I arrive at their house. Giving me a big hug, adds, “How awful for you and Anna. How is she?”
“She’s fine. She’s staying at Helen’s tonight since the Rectory is a crime scene.
“Speaking of whom, I invited both of them to join us for dinner tonight, since you’ll be here anyway. Anna turned me down, said she already had other plans, but Helen said yes. She’s going to call when she finishes up at the scene and I’ll put the finishing touches on everything once she gets here.”
“I was with her when she got the message. Vivian, you are amazing. Thank you so much for this.”
“Not at all. I’m just glad we can help.”
Helen finally gets to the Applegates about 8 p.m. and gratefully accepts the large glass of sangria Vivian offers her. Viv then shoos her
