Chapter 2 Quarrel

VO: She spoke decisively without any hesitation. But no one knew that her heart was currently bleeding. The veins on the back of Frederic's hand protruded, his gaze sharp as he stared at Joey. "Are you aware of the consequences of saying this?" "Why? What I said displeases you? Frederic, I'm tired. I don't want a love triangle anymore." "Take back your words, and I can pretend we are still good." Joey looked at him with utmost disappointment. "Once said, I won't take it back. I'm moving out today!" With that, she tried to stand up from the bed, but Frederic forcefully pulled her into his arms. His warm, moist lips accurately captured hers. With a low, magnetic voice carrying a hint of coldness, he said, "Aren't you afraid the Renfro family will return to its previous state after you leave me? This is what you exchanged your three years of youth for." Joey's mind was suddenly blown; her eyes widened in disbelief. "Make yourself clear, what do you mean?" Frederic's cold fingertips carelessly rolled over the bite mark on her lips, a hint of a sneer hooked at the corner of his mouth. "Setting up a trap for me, making me save you, and being with me even if we won't ever get married. Wasn't it all for helping your father save the Renfro family? Was there ever another reason?" Three years ago, the Renfro family indeed faced an unprecedented economic crisis. After starting a relationship with her, Frederic brought a lot of business to the Renfro family, helping them out of the crisis. At that time, she thought it was because Frederic liked her that he was willing to lend a hand. With trembling lips, Joey asked, "So, for the past three years, all the kindness you've shown me was just an act without a shred of genuine feeling?" Frederic's forehead veins were throbbing with anger at Joey's words. He treated her with love and care. How could she accuse him with such harsh words? Through gritted teeth, he said, "This is just a game for fun, not love. Did you really think I'd take it seriously?" This short yet clear-cut sentence pierced Joey's heart like a dagger. "Frederic, you son of a b***h!" She devoted three years of deep affection, only to be treated by Frederic as a blatant transaction of money and s*x. She had foolishly thought that he loved her. At this thought, every inch of her skin felt as if it were being torn apart. The sorrow at the bottom of the eyes also gradually turned into coldness. "Mr. Adamson, if you think it was all my trick, three years of my youth should be enough to repay your favor. From now on, we're even. Let's go our separate ways!" Frederic stared at Joey's stubborn little face with anger intensifying in his eyes. "Joey, think how you can make a living without me! I'll give you one night to think it over! After that, there's no turning back." "I've thought it damn over!" The man turned and left with a cold and stern aura, leaving Joey curled up alone in bed. Tears that had been held back unconsciously slid down the cheeks. Her seven years of affection, including three years of meticulous care, turned out to be an indecent transaction in Frederic's eyes. In a romantic relationship between two individuals, the person who fell in love first often experiences heartbreak. Moreover, she had been in love with Frederic for four years before he even knew her. She lost miserably; her dignity completely shattered. As Joey packed up her things, she couldn't help but tear up at the sight of the matching decorations she had once carefully selected one by one. She still remembered the feelings she had while purchasing each item. She took down everything that belonged to her, packed it into her suitcase, and discarded anything that wouldn't fit. After her sadness had passed, Joey dragged her suitcase and left without looking back. Frederic had said she couldn't make a living without him. But what he didn't know was that she was a top law student, not just a secretary. She had a bright future ahead of her! ***** On the other side. The black Cullinan cut through the quiet streets like a bolt of lightning. Frederic's mind was filled with the resolute tone of Joey saying, "Let's break up." Simply because he failed to accompany her on her birthday, solely due to jealousy, she had decided to end their relationship. It seemed he needed to manage her temper properly. Frederic was so angry that he ripped off his tie and threw it aside. It took several rings before he pressed to answer the phone. "What?" A dissipated and unrestrained voice came from the opposite. "What are you doing? What took you so long to answer the phone?" "Driving!" Jason Sandell smirked mischievously. "Oh? Which one? Ms. Renfro? Did I disturb you?" "You have nothing better to do?" "I'm just asking. Wanna come to Nightshade? Martin's treat." Ten minutes later, at the Nightshade Bar. Jason handed Frederic a glass of wine, watching him with a mischievous smile. "Your face is almost dragging on the ground. What happened? Did you quarrel with Joey?" Frederic stared at him with cold eyes. "Couples have their ups and downs. Haven't you seen that before?" "Oh! After 'getting along' for a long time, you developed feelings and fell in love with her?" Jason deliberately emphasized "getting along", his face carrying a wild and cheeky smile. Frederic showed no mercy as he kicked him. "f**k off!" "Fine. But let me tell you something. If you really like Joey, you better keep your distance from Scarlett; don't just pick up every call from her and run to her whenever she asks you to. Don't regret losing Joey only when it's too late." Frederic furrowed his brows. "I told her Scarlett isn't a threat, but she didn't believe me." "Come on, no woman would believe that. Scarlett is your childhood sweetheart with a marriage contract since childhood. Have you seen any woman who would tolerate her man always running to his little sweetheart?" Frederic shook out a cigarette from the pack, lit it, and took a big puff, his eyes turning gloomier. "She and I..." Before he could finish speaking, the private room door was pushed open. Martin Palance walked in, arm in arm with Scarlett. "Sorry, Scarlett is not in a good mood today. I brought her along; you guys don't mind, do you?" Jason glanced at Frederic, whose face was gloomy, and chuckled. "Not at all. Your sister is my sister. Scarlett, come sit over here with me." The smile on Scarlett's face was gentle and pure, revealing no hidden thoughts. "You're right in front of the air conditioning vent. It's too cold. I'm fine sitting here." Having said that, she sat down beside Frederic. She took out a delicate little box from the bag and placed it in front of Frederic. "Frederic, last time you missed your girlfriend's birthday because of saving me. She wasn't mad at you, was she?" Frederic said indifferently, "No." "Glad to hear that. This is the lipstick I bought for her as an apology. If she misunderstands anything, I can explain it to her in person." Frederic refused without even looking. "No need." Upon hearing this, Scarlett's eyes immediately reddened. "Frederic, are you blaming me for bothering you all the time? I don't want to, but when I'm sick, I can't help but want to call you." Bean-sized teardrops rolled down her cheeks. Frederic glanced at her; his brows furrowed tightly. He put the lipstick into his pocket and murmured, "I'll accept this on her behalf." Scarlett's expression brightened immediately; she smiled as she poured a glass of wine for Frederic. "Frederic, try this wine. It's a 1982 vintage wine; my brother bought it from an overseas auction." As she handed the wine glass to Frederic, her fingers inadvertently touched his wrist. Frederic quickly dodged and stubbed out the cigarette in his mouth into the ashtray. He said indifferently, "Leave it there." Seeing his rejection, a trace of coldness flashed in Scarlett's eyes. But quickly, she reverted to her innocent and sensible demeanor. Martin, holding a glass of wine, clinked it against Frederic's and said, "I haven't met your girlfriend yet. Bring her over sometime for dinner." Jason smirked. "Probably not recently. The two are quarreling." Martin looked at Frederic's gloomy face and said with a smile, "A quarrel happens in relationships; just coax her. But don't end up like the guy whose wife I saved. She almost died of excessive bleeding after a miscarriage, but her husband didn't even answer her call and was with another woman!"
