14 Meredith suffered a disappointment on Friday when David telephoned to say he wouldn’t be able to make it to Garrison for the planned weekend. In some ways, Cady was relieved – she was still haunted by the prospect of meeting a man who might resemble her father in some way, despite the years that had passed. But she was sorry for Meredith, who seemed to be suffering a week of disappointments. Walt had provided the final estimate for the carpentry and roofing, and as Cady suspected all along, it was far too expensive to contemplate.
