Meredith suffered a disappointment on Friday when David telephoned to say he wouldn’t be able to make it to Garrison for the planned weekend. In some ways, Cady was relieved – she was still haunted by the prospect of meeting a man who might resemble her father in some way, despite the years that had passed. But she was sorry for Meredith, who seemed to be suffering a week of disappointments.
Walt had provided the final estimate for the carpentry and roofing, and as Cady suspected all along, it was far too expensive to contemplate. It didn’t matter how many ways Meredith broke down the estimate, nor how much Walt suggested they could do themselves, the final figure was too prohibitive.
